Dumb question about micrsoft word xp

My question is, How do you draw or write with the mouse without word interpreting it as a shape? I have a tablet pc which is a pen based pc running word xp on win 98se. The tablet pc patch for word xp doesnt work becasue it requires win xp. i'm trying to figure out how i can right comments on the side or draw a picture without using autoshapes in my document.
