Dumb question about Divx on 360

Ok...a little background of my issue...

I used FairUse Wizard 2.6 to make a couple Divx Movies out of our library so I can play them through the xBox 360 in our room (HDMI model hooked up to our 37 inch Toshiba HDTV)

When going through the menus for Frairuse it has an option to "crop" out the widscreen black bars and to what I presume would be the default 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio of the video.

I loaded the Divx movie in Power DVD and it showed up as widescreen with NO black bars

However when I load the video on the xbox 360 for playback it has the black bars.

I have the Xbox 360 hooked up to the tv via HDMI....

The TV is 720p and I have the xbox 360 set to 720p

Is this just how all videos play regardless? With Black bars top and bottom?

The last question is probably pretty stupid but I don't understand if it is a widescreen movie and I have a widscreen LCD that it still has the black bars...why won't it fill the whole screen...

Thanks for any advice!

HDTVs are 16:9. Most movies are made in different aspect ratios. Hence, you will get the black bars on the top and bottom regardless. It is still widescreen.

If you tried to fill your HDTV with a non-16:9 movie you'd just be distorting the picture.

Which I did experiment with...

I figured something logical like different ratios are for different movies...ect...

Would be nice if there was some sort of standard :D

Thanks Queasy...

Fixed for plurality. Common widescreen ratios are 1.78:1 (16:9), 1.85:1, 2:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1 (usually rounded to 2.4:1).

see here.

when your videoplays on the xbox, go over to the size icon and put it on letterbox. it will automatically stretch the width to the edges of the TV. if there are still black bars then it's because of the aspect ratio.
