Dumb pencil trick OCing question

Sorry for this dumb question. I used the "pencil trick" to close the L1 bridges on my Althon 1G. I was running at 7.5 x 133 FSB for maybe two weeks, and then one night I started up my computer and it wouldn't boot. I could not boot at 7.5 x 133 FSB, and had to clear the CMOS and reset to 10 x 100. These are the exact symptoms that showed before I used the pencil trick.

My question is --- is it possible for the pencil trick to "wear off"? I can't think of anything, other than heat, that would cause it to do so, but in reading this and other forums, I haven't heard of this before.

Just asking this out of curiosity, more than anything.

TIA

Make sure to put it on heavy! Like 15-20 passes at least. If it happens again, go to the window defogger repair kit and make it permanent...

Radio shack sells the conductive ink pens. Look under chemicals. It runs around $10.

Thanks everyone! I guess I'll bite the bullet and attempt to pull off my Alpha without injuring myself once again.

rondeemc Thanks for the info. I've been searching through the RS page looking for it and just found it thanks to your advice under "chemicals". Imagine that!

Some people have had success with the window deicer repair kits you find in automotive stores.

they are repair kits for the deicer grid on the rear window of automobiles. You use it to complete the electrical circuit the same as with the conductive pen or the carbon pencil trick.

Don't use the window defogger kit. The surface tension of the liquid is too high and you get a real mess trying to do it (i.e., you get too much at once).

Instead, use the Circuit Writer pen from Radio Shack. It's a special order. Look up Circuit Writer in the catalog Supplier Index. In my catalog, the item is on page 204, item number 910-3890. If you buy 1, it's $9.95 plus shipping and tax.

P.S., take the cap off and use a toothpick, it's a lot easier to apply that way. Now if only my damn MSI mobo wouldn't freak out with the multipliers. Long live ABIT!

Personaly i found the defogger trick woeks fine. Use a flat surface to cover up one of the bridges adjacent to the one you are working on, and apply the defogger repair paint with the pointy end of a toothpick (prepared by gently slicing straight down on the toothpick about 1/8 of an inch, so you effectively have a very small paintbrush). HAve some acetone handy incase you mess up.

If you have any soldering experience, I'd give that a shot. I'm fixin' to do that shortly, as soon as I figure out what the best way to O/C my Iwill KK266 is. I mean... do I physically change the multiplier on my T-bird so that at 133MHz FSB , it will be funning at a resonable frequency? There are issues now with the Bios multipliers and stuff, so I know I'll need to unlock the CPU on the L1 bridges, and I'll probably have to boost the CPU voltage to 1.85 for default (cause the Bios doesn't like controlling that either).

I don't want to hardwire the FSB/internal multiplier to a different value becasue I wanna be able to play around with the thing.

it's still cold here in Toronto eh.. can't wait for the spring.. I did the pencil thing.. but when I get a good cooler, and I take off this stock one, I'm gonna go for the defogger kit stuff.. everyone says to use a toothpick to apply it.. and it's permanent. (but you can clean up any mess or bad moves with nail polish remover)

Good thing I don't live in california, cause if I did I would have to worry about all those health risks...

It's just the solvent they use. Plenty of items of a similiar nature at your local hardware store.
