I have one of those apartment mailboxes where several mailboxes are side by side and you need a key. if I put outgoing mail inside, will the mailman take it?

There should be a large "Outgoing Mail" drop-box near your mailboxes. Use that.

probably not. the mailmen who go to apartment buildings have tons of stuff to deal with and don't often take outgoing mail since it's not part of their duties. they usually just deliver and go home.

What have you been smoking?

Every apartment I've lived in has had a box for outgoing mail, and that box is emptied each time the postman visits.

I was talking to my mailman on Friday and we were talking about how they took away my outgoing mailbox because it wasn't used enough. He then offered to take my outgoing mail for me if I leave it in the front of my mailbox and make it apparent. I wouldn't count on that on a global basis but perhaps on an individual basis.

It's not always obvious. Sometimes it's integrated into the wall (flush-mounted) and not labled conspicuously. By "large" I simply meant that it is one box to accomodate all the tenants.

Of course if you're in a downtown area, it's possible that you're stuck with using a USPS drop box on the street. Back in Pittsburgh they had one about every block.
