Dumb brother gets spyware on dad's laptop (XP)

I'm sure there've been many stories like this on ATOT. Mine is no more interesting than any other except for one amusing little detail: my brother figured out that he's better off web surfing on their Mac, because the chances of not getting spyware are so much better. 😀

Now where's that spyware removal thread...
(<--- heads to Software forum)

I spent 2 hours today on a user's desktop trying to cleanup spyware. DAMN YOU VIRTUMUNDO :|

Dear old dad is having trouble understanding why when he visits expedia.com, he sees ads for orbitz.com.:brokenheart:

man that brings a tear to my eyes? Is he a elder? Its reallly saddens me. Give him a tissue. 🙁:|

heh, today at work I was helping a teacher with a broken 2k installation. While I was in the BIOS changing the boot order so I could boot from CD, she was explaining how the kids would kick the loose power cord, and it would get unplugged "like this!"

I was nice, I just rerouted the power cord to a more secure location and suggested that she not unplug the computer while I was working on it.

He's 70. Not clueless, but still a little surprised and mystified when it happens. I don't think he's aware of who caused it to happen... and how (I can guess what kind of sites were visited...). I should blame myself for not being stringent enough in setting things up.

i've heard of a program called deep freeze. always wanted to try it out.

Thats only for terminal stations usually since after every restart the computer goes back to an saved state, so you can't install new software, drivers, plugins, documents without it being gone the next time. atleast thats hwo it worked at my highschool

Yeah, we use deepfreeze on our computers at my college where I work on them. Deepfreeze works pretty great, but the installing of software isn't usually a problem as you can temporarily "unfreeze" the computer for an install and then "boot frozen" when you are done, with the new software working in the usual saved state. If you upgrade/reformat/install stuff often, it'll be a pain, but if it is only every once in a while (like every few weeks or less), then its pretty useful.
