Dumb ATI Drivers: UPDATE card might be dead

I just bought Splinter Cell, so I go and update my drivers for my 9700, and now I get all these artifacts while playing. I thought new drivers would help it out but I guess I shouldn't have done that. Now Warcraft 3 is all messed up when I play it. So I go and try to roll back the drivers, and it still doesn't work. Now I'm thinking I should do a clean XP install and start all over. Freaking annoying. Anyone know of a tool that will clean out your old drivers completely? It seems like rolling back or uninstalling it doesn't seem to do the trick.

see if you can uninstall any ati programs in your add/remove programs thingy, then change your video display driver to "VGA" or whatever it's called. after you restart, download and install the latest drivers and control panel from ati.

I did exactly that, I uninstalled all of the ATI drivers and it still didn't work. The problem is, the OLDER drivers didn't give me artifacts, upgrading to the NEWER drivers did. I'm not overclocking, but that is an interesting comment, Damn i hope my fan didn't die.

Go browse around the Rage3D forums. They have a guide that tells you how to completely remove your old drivers before installing new ones. Apparently you're supposed to do this everytime you install new drivers. Technically this is true for any driver be it sound, mobo, etc. Ofcourse you're also supposed to do a complete system backup as well. ;)

The topic says it all. I can't remember how many times the drivers screwed up my system.

Thank you ghost.

This is the only reason I have not upgraded to the 9700 from my Ti4600.

I won't dispute the fact that ATi's drivers have come leaps and bounds over what they used to be.

There are still issues with updating drivers though. It can be a pain in the ass and require a reformat irregardless of the "I have used ATi for 40 years and never had an issue" comments.

Is this like Dumb SUV drivers? Matrox is the worst EVER for drivers. I WILL NEVER buy another one of their POS cards after my terrible nightmare with that piece of sh*t G200 GARBAGE.

After a good number of years with older ATI Rage and Radeon products, I've learned to never, EVER update video drivers unless there's a new release of DirectX or a new WHQL release of drivers. Even then its a pain, because ATI has to separate the drivers and the control panels (WHY????), and then sometimes you have to update Multimedia Center on top of that.

When playing Splinter Cell demo, sometimes I get a weird gray box in the corner of my screen. Its not there in the menus or when I hit tab for an overlay menu, but its there when playing. Happens 1 in 10 times loading the game...

You're an idiot....

On an ATI note, I haven't had any driver problems.

Haha I knew you'd come in! You're the guy who was pissed when your old POS Matrox G400 filthy slow video poo was dead! Matrox SUCKS!!!!

My G200 was slow when I got it and was always slow. It took matrox about 15 years before they released any decent drivers for it and by then it was just old crappy hardware. Screw them. I kick myself every day for not having bought a Voodoo 2 instead of that G200 junk.

My G400 was still playing games until I bought my 9700.... :)

PICTURE being the operative word, cause that card couldn't produce moving video in a game. Its frames per second capability was about .2 FPS.

Ditto.

I work as a tech for a local computer shop... you'd be amazed how quickly you learn that the drivers still suck...

I still haven't understood the whole point of fanboys getting mad about people saying that.. jeez... get a life people...

I was getting over 30fps in UT at 1024x768 32bit. Very smooth.

For all the ATI fanboys, sure a few people get stuff working flawlessly. That was my case before I upgraded to the new drivers. Have I ever had any problems like this with Nvidia drivers? NEVER! I had a TNT2, geforce2 MX, Geforce 2 GTS, and a Geforce 3, never had something like this happen to public(non beta) drivers. Its a great card, I'm not saying its not, but we all know they've had driver problems. Anyhow, I'll take the advice of some of the posters and see what I can do.
