Dumb 9600pro question.

I bought a low cost Sapphire 9600pro oem and was sent the Advantage edition - lower clocked ram. Anyways I complained and now for close to the same price I can have a 256mb 9600pro or a 128mb 9600pro - both at proper memory speeds. Is the 128mb still preferable - with the new games that are out?
 
Only a few vidcards are capable of taking advantage of 256MB of RAM. The X800 line and the 6800 line are the two main ones. The Radeon 9800 Pro 256 and the 59x0 are borderline, IMO.
 
I say, if the RAM speeds are the same and the price is the same and everything else is the same, then get the 256MB version, but usually that isn't the case, make sure you check it out thoroughly.
 
As close as I can tell, the memory and vpu speeds are the same - but have heard the 128mb version has faster latencies. Probably not much of a real difference between them. I was surprised at how well the pro advantage version ran a couple of games. Not quite as good as my 9700pro, but quite acceptable. :beer:
 
Assuming they're around $100, if the 256mb version is LESS then a $10 difference, get that one because there are some instances where it may help. But in 95% of situations, u wont see the difference between the two cards in today's games. It is becomming more manditory (slowly) in upcomming games, so it may help a bit in the future. But then again i dont see a 9600p being a card id have for too long if i demanded high IQ in a year or so either.
 
Yep exactly around $100.00 american. Younger kids will use it for gaming and they don't really care much about IQ.
 
I doubt the 256 is comparable to the 128. Unless they've changed, the 256 one has horrendous ram speeds (about 5ns). I know this cause I got the 256 one thinking it was a better deal than the 128 one cause it was only 5 dollars more than the 128 one at the time. The 128 one has a 200mhz increase in memory speed over the 256 and it makes a hell of a lot bigger impact than the extra 128mb of ram. Go for the 128mb one. Though I am not all dissappointed with my 256 one, it has suited me well for all my gaming needs.
