recently we've been hit pretty hard by heatwave and power-shortage.. ads are all over freeway and television about conserving energy. 'Flex your power' anyone?

what do I see on my way to gym today at 2pm? a outside hallway that has 40 lights on.. that's at when a freaking sun is shining like heck.

they want to repair a small leak yet they ignore the big hole right on their front yard. we need to pass law to limit lighting usage and ban unneccessary usage in daylight time.

Everyone blames Gray Davis for the problem that was caused by Pete Wilson and his energy company buddies. Remember "De-Regulation"? We were promised lower electrical rates, the opportunity to buy power from whatever sources we wanted to, and none of that came true. Instead, the power companies realized it wasn't going to work the way they had promised, so they got the courts to stop the consumer from buying power from anyone but their regular provider. The Enron debacle and faked power shortages of 2000/2001 were not caused because we were low on power supplies, but rather staged events to drive up prices, since it was no longer regulated. Davis did what he could in negotiating power deals, which at the time seemed high, but by today's standards, the prices he got are pretty low, considering the current market...
Want to blame someone for that bullsh*t? Blame Pete Wilson, PG&E, and SDG&E.
BTW, Davis rammed thru legislation "fast tracking" the building of power plants here, and we now have something like a dozen new plants generating electricity since those "rolling black-out" days...

It hits bottlenecks in the system, which stops the increased flow...We need more transmission lines built to handle the increased demand. New server farms suck up a LOT of power. Should they be required to build their own dedicated co-gens to feed them, freeing up tons of megawatts for the general public?

i did have to laugh at my company, though. we turned off all the lights to save energy, which is great and all, but here are like 25-50 computers all chugging away with nobody on them, screens showing the all-important "Windows XP" logo, burning way more energy than the flourescents. and of course the A/C is blasting like crazy. i put a bunch of the computers to sleep when nobody was looking.

california has added 36 power plants since gray davis was recalled in 2001, according to the WSJ.
