Yes, this is for real. It's being shown today at PAX. I know many don't care or have given up but for as iconic a character and as infamous as vaporware can get, if it's a good game I'm all for happy endings.

And yes, I realize Duke Forever probably won't be as demanding as Crysis is on our beloved gpu's, but I thought the title was appropriate!

While I have seen a lot of articles over the years about DNF getting released, I have not seen one from a reputable site like the Wall Street Journal. According to the Article, the game is done and they are just going through and polishing it before it is released.

The game is currently expected to ship in 2010 although given it’s history Pitchford is understandably reluctant to be more specific. “We’re in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill,” he says. “We need to get past the shock and awe and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan.”

I wonder if it was released how big of a hit it would be. Everyone has been commenting on this game's non release for years, I wonder if that build up will hurt or help them.

All that hype and buildup... the game will be a disappointment, at least if it never releases people will still remember the name fondly.

I'm not too sure about that.
At this point I think the majority of people want/expect 2 things in this game:

1) Stupid mindless carnage (of pig cops)
2) Duke Nulem attitude

Everything else after that will be gravy. Duke was never about the "fanciness" of the game. It wasn't about story, or graphics. It was just about mindless fun.

That being said, the trouble Duke will have is that the original was released at a time where EVERYTHING in 3D gaming was new. The Duke "style" has been done already with varying levels of success (Im looking at you Serious Sam). So I think a lot of that "fun" factor is lost in today's games as we've seen it ALL already. No matter what the devs throw at us.

Me personally? No matter what, I'm ready to kick ass and chew bubble gum...

No way I'd pay full price for this. Probably won't be long after release until it shows up on a Steam sale for $10 or less.

did they say what engine is used in this game? i hope it's not UE3.

No, but according to the article they just took the game by 3DRealms and completed it, so it is likely the same engine that 3DRealms had been using. I think it was ID4 if I remember right, but I am not sure.

"The game is currently expected to ship in 2011"

Yeah, the article changed (I literally copy and pasted the quote from the article). Probably since Randy Pitchford said he expected it to release in 2011 during PAX.

They can't release it! Doing so would invalidate all the jokes:

Duke Nukem For-never, Duke Nukem Whenever, Duke Nukem Forever and ever and ever, etc..
