Duke Nukem Forever . . . its back!

There may be hope yet for the ludicrously long-in-the-making Duke Nukem Forever. Sources claiming to have knowledge of the situation tell Kotaku that Duke Nukem Forever development continues at a new home, Borderlands developer Gearbox Software.

The studio responsible for Brothers In Arms, Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines is said to have picked up Duke Nukem Forever development where former studio 3D Realms left off, perhaps Duke's best bet for eventual completion.

Duke Nukem Forever, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous, is now in the hands of Gearbox and is planned to be released under the studio's name. Gearbox was outed as the developer of the apparently scrapped Duke Nukem spin-off Duke Begins earlier this year.

Take-Two Interactive still maintains publishing rights to the title, which the company confirmed to Kotaku tonight. (A company spokesperson declined to comment about the status of the Duke Nukem Forever project and whether it is in the works at Gearbox.)

One source indicated that a playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever will be available later this year.

The development of Duke Nukem Forever has been in limbo since 3D Realms' demise in 2009. Publisher Take-Two later sued 3D Realms for its failure to deliver Duke Nukem Forever in a reasonable time frame. The two parties settled their differences in May of 2010 under unspecified terms.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford declined to comment to Kotaku on the matter, indicating that he may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

3D Realms founder George Broussard, the man infamously in charge of Duke Nukem Forever, did not respond to requests for comment.

Given the nature of Duke Nukem Forever's long and storied history, we're filing this under rumor for now, but we'll be keeping a close eye on PAX-related developments for further details.

Here we go again!

Next we'll be hearing Stargate: Worlds will be resuming development and Diakatana II will be getting released too.

Duke Nukem Forever and Ever and Ever and Ever and....

For some reason I really cant stand George Broussard, so I think the demise of his studio and dream is a strange sort of schadenfreude for me. Dont get me wrong, I want to see the game, I just got so tired of his arrogance.

Besides, only complete incompetence could have led to that mess.

Back on topic, I'll believe it when I have the game sitting in my hands.

I have a soft spot for George Broussard, since I have very fond memories of playing his Pharaoh's Tomb and Arctic Adventure games back in ~1990. But yeah, he certainly hasn't come off well with all the DNF BS.

I think it would have been cool if they just released the game sometime next year or whenever without any fanfare at all. Just "oh hay, guess what, we've been secretly working on DNF for the past two years, enjoy!"

I guess leaks and rumors are inevitable. But DNF is the one game where pre-release hype might actually be a negative. No one will believe it's actually being finished until they can actually go out and buy it.

That has always been my "idea" too. Just to slip it out there and let it be "found". Let the wild fire then spread.

Or, in conjunction with Vavle, just one day, completely out of the blue, toss it up for sale on Steam. Blammo. It'd be the biggest news on the internet for weeks.

Oh hell... at this point, I don't even want the game to come out, I just want the rumor to continue circulating for all eternity with no end in sight. :awe:

I have to admit, I still want the game even if it is a joke. The video they released looked pretty fun. That said, how many old assets can a new development team really make use of effectively?

With this douche(George Broussard) out of the picture. I suspect it is possible for this project to actually get finished.

I can't wait for this to finally come out and suck balls so we (mostly myself 😀) don't have to hear about it anymore.

10 years from now:

Blizzard, the company that has produced titles like Starcraft is now working on a new title called: Duke Nukem Forever

and insanity. Sounds like a total nutcase, ruined by initial success.

I don't know why so many people care or get excited about DNF.

I have a hard time seeing Duke Nukem succeed nowadays. If it ever does come out, the game will bomb and will probably be terrible.

I'll eat my words though if I'm wrong.

I'm certainly not going to bet against you. The Duke's been nuked. We don't need his deformed, radioactive zombie coming back. I think Take-Two is just working on it out of pure spite at this point.

You may be right but people will still buy a ton of copies just to see what the game is like, so there is money to be made by whomever finishes and releases it.

I don't see a Duke Nukem game doing bad, but I don't see it doing great either. However, if they added more controversy with content, I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes.
