Buy a sound card?

I think what we need here is more info. I had it working on my newer system about 3 months ago. It should work.

make up the sound yourself, you don't need a sound card for that game.

In real deep voice: "Shake it baby!" (after handing money to dancer)
"Oooh, I needed that" (after health kit)
"Duh duh dut, duh duh dut, duh duh....you get the idea"

And so on and so forth :)

On an X-Fi I dont know.
My Audigy 1 came with legacy drivers. All I had to do was look up the IRQ and such in the hardware manager.

(Remember the good old days when you knew your soundblasters IRQ and DMA by heart. :) )

You should use Doom95 for playing Doom on Windows 9x or XP.
