DUI: What are your thoughts on them?

DUI's can mean anything, any drug, any alcohol, anything can truely get you a DUI.

however, let's focus on the main 2.

Mary Jane
and
Alcohol

do you believe that they are both as deadly when driving under the influence of either? or is one safer to drive from, or one that much less safe, while the other is still unsafe?

i will admit ive driven drunk once, and i will never do it again, i was pretty plastered, and should NOT have been out. it was a baddd decision, and wont happen again.

however

i have also driven high once, and it was no different than driving regularly... everything was fine, i was actually more cautious, and paid more attn to where i was going than what was around me.

don't be a fvcking idiot and drive under the influence. if it was up to me anyone who was caught driving under the influence would lose their driver's licence perminantly.

When you DUI, please drive off a very high cliff and hopefully into very solid rocks, and explode.

how i knew that would happen.

however, 3 ppl replied, 7 have voted, and i got one of those votes...

i would like to see those who voted "marijuana is safest" reply as well.

Alcohol is very dangerous when done in excess and messes up reaction time, decision making ability, coordination, etc...

Pot really doesn't do much of anything to affect driving ability. Reaction time may be slightly less but most people tend to drive slower while stoned.

I'd really like to see some kind of research showing these findings. Not that I necessarily doubt them per se, but i find it hard to believe that marijuana has little to no effect on reaction time, hand-eye coordination, and decision-making ability.

i don't know, i can usually have 3-4 drinks and still be able to drive safely. beyond that my decision making sucks and i know i start to drive a little more loosely. however, i stopped doing that after college. many of my friends started getting caught one by one, and i felt like my turn was coming up.

The truth of the matter is that some people drive better under the influence than other people sober. If you can pass a field sobriety test, I think you should be good to go no matter how much alcohol you have in your system.

In some places in Europe that actually is the law I think.

Ding ding ding.

While functioning alcoholics can drive perfectly fine when they are hammered, the probability of someone driving under the influence and hurting themselves or others is too high to allow it to be legal... Simply how it is. Accept it, and don't drink and drive.

It probaly seemed that way to you...

Marijuana MIGHT be less safe simply because people seem to be under the illusion/delusion that they are driving really well while high. Kind of like cell phone drivers. They think they are doing really well meanwhile they have almost killed 10 people.

Of course, it depends on how intoxicated with each you are. At some point alcohol clearly becomes worse.

Not gonna get into the discussion of Marijuana vs alcohol, as both seriously impair your judgement and driving abilities.

First offense DUI. 1 yr in jail (no work release) with a 5 yr revocation of driving priviledges.
2nd offense DUI 5 yrs in prison, lifetime revocation of driving priviledges.
3rd offense DUI 10 yrs in prison, lifetime revocation of driving priviledges

Any subsequent violations...life in prison. Driving under the influence should be treated like assault with a deadly weapon or attempted murder.

HOWEVER, the statutes should be changed a bit...under .1, wet/reckless.
penalties should be
1st offense 30 days in jail, 90 day suspension of driving priviledges
2nd offense 90 days in jail, 1 yr suspension of driving priviledges
3rd offense, 1 yr in jail, 5 yr suspension of driving priviledges
ANY subsequent violations, charge as DUI with the appropriate penalties.

IMO, cops should sit outside bars, and bust people as they leave in their cars. No different than sitting outside a known drug house, and busting the customers as they leave...

K. I've driven high so many times. No problems. I actually feel you focus on the road better. It always feels like you're going faster than you really are, but frankly, it's not difficult.

I've only seen one accident. I was with 3 friends, we split up. I drove one, my friend followed me and drove my other friend. It was around midnight. He was playing with his iPod and drove off the side of the road and hit a telephone pole. Not badly because he noticed at the last second and turned away. Just got a flat tire and broke his headlight.

But I've also driven drunk with seventeen people in my friends Suburban. That was fun... not.

Really, neither are safe. But I think driving drunk is harder. Though it depends how many beers.

The current limit of 0.8% for alcohol is just absurd. For my weight, thats barely a beer. If I am going out, I limit myself to 5 beers throughout the night if I know I have to drive somewhere afterward.

Driving while sleep deprived is just as much of an issue IMO.

The true effects depend much on the individual.

Both can be very dangerous.

When people get stoned they get stupid.
When people get drunk they get stupid.

I don't do any illegal drugs.
Sure I'll drive after going out to dinner and having 1 or 2 beers, or after being at a bbq for 6 hours during which 7 or 8 beers were consumed .... but I know my limitations. I know the ABV of what I drink. I know my mass. I know how much it takes to feel the influence. I also know time is the only way to sober up for when I do overindulge.

I'm not about to down a bottle of Captain Morgan and then play Carmageddon in my Chrysler.

"State offers Exhibit A. Forum postings in which Defendant has admitted past use of alcohol and marijuana." 😀

In high enough quantities both can be dangerous...in small enough quantities w an appropriate tolerance level both can be driven on (relatively) safely. If you drink or smoke from time to time and have a beer or a hit you can probably get behind the wheel and it won't affect you. Never smoke before and do massive bong hits of kind bud and it will be no different than doing 10 shots in a row. Point is....it's all relative.
