Duh, that was a waste... One year of engineering for naught?

I was talkin' to my mom on the way to work this morning, & I mentioned that I wanted to go back to school but I didn't have the money. She said that because my sister and I would both be in college at once, & with only one $40,000 income for the family, I should be able to get a lot of financial aid. Plus, if I was in school I wouldn't have to pay $400 a month rent, & I'd be able to stay on my parents' insurance until I was 21.

I think I want a CIS degree. But what sucks is I've barely taken ANY of the classes for it. All my classes are for the engineering transfer. Lots of physics, calculus, & engineering. :( So I've got to basically start over in a new degree program.

Dat sucks.

Sheesh, maybe I could get financial aid. But both my parents work full time, and my bro and me, yet we can't seem to pull out of a rut, and eliminate all our debt.

i've heard that there is this new government program that might be comming out soo that says if you are majoring in any computer/science/reseach degree the government will give you a full ride if your take a government job for 2 years or so after graduation.

I was going for electronics engineering, but I decided I hated it. CIS fits me better, I think. I'd eventually like to get at least a bachelor's in CIS, along with the usual battery of MCSE/CCNP certs. I want to get it over & done with, though, since I'm running out of time before I'm going to want to get married.

Well Viper, alot of those credits from engineering will count towards your core requirements, and maybe tech electives. You're basically in the same situation I was last year. I had 2years of Biomedical Engineering under my belt when I realized I didn't want to be an engineer for the rest of my life. I switched to CIS. Many of my credits counted towards my math & science requirements (they fscking better have! I didn't suffer through 2 semesters of Chem and 3 semesters of Calc for nothing!), and several of my Engineering courses (Mechanics of Materials, Circuits, etc) counted as tech electives. I'm sure if I ever visited my advisor, we could do some "creative auditing" to get some more of those credits to count. Basically, after 2 years of engineering and three years of CIS, I will graduate with a BS in CIS, a minor in Information Technology Services, and an Oracle Certification (my database classes correspond to the Oracle classes) next summer. So, I'll be an extra year (and I will be taking one or 2 courses this summer), but I'm only part time (have to work too). Just to let you know it can be done :)

Looking over the list of CIS requirements I do have some of them, just not many. I have a few of the really early CIS classes, as well as all of the writing classes (including tech writing). I also have so much "general education" that I could knock off roughly a third of the course load with my existing transcript. But all the calculus, chemistry, physics, etc. is wasted. Not that I remember any of it anyway.

Viper, welcome to the sh!t that is college. I'm in the same boat. I've got the engineering transfer, but I have hated ALL of it. I need to move to CIS or maybe straight up CS. I dunno, either way I loose hours. It sucks, and I'm even a little older than you. :( :|:|

Viper,

Maybe you can get financial aid, if not then it is time for personal sacrifice if you are serious about school. When I was doing my undergrad work I was able to stay at home and avoid rent. Every summer I worked 60-80/week to raise the tuition money I would need for the following semisters. This allowed me to only work part time during semisters and make decent grades. It was a long 5 years, but I got out without any financial aid.

That stinks. I hope I don't change my mind about my major again, I'd be in the same position you are right now:). At least you know what you want to do, Viper.

The first half I'll get out of the way at the local community college (PCC). That way it's only $40 a credit hour instead of several hundred. I'd like to get aid for that, but if I can't I can probably manage that without too much trouble. Especially if I'm not payin rent. Once I transfer to Portland State, or somewhere like that it'll get a LOT more expensive. Then I'll have to get financial aid, or find a rich old lady to rob.

;)

Viper, check and see if you can test out of some of those courses that you are missing.

I spent 5 yrs in University obtaining my Mech Eng Degree. It was worth all the stress.

Those Thermodynamics classes were some of the worst.

Hope you get back to school man. I think you should be able to pull some finaid, if not, maybe your employer has some sort of tuition reimbursement.

eeeeek.

My employer does do tuition reimbursement, but if I'm not working at least 30 hours a week I wouldn't qualify for it.

40 right now, but I go back to school that would drop to around 20 most likely.

Skoorb...

The real issue is working my class schedule around my work schedule. Unless I happen to get lucky & get a lot of my classes via the web, or at night (or on weekends), I'll be forced to reduce the amount of hours I work.
