Duel Proc System - Help, Need info

Got a couple questions that I need some help with. I have been completley out of the hardware loop for about a year and a half, so I am pretty lost.

I am building a duel Proc system. I know with the latest AMD boards, if you use all 4 memory slots, you need registered RAM. My friend says that no matter how many DIMMS you use in a Duel Proc AMD system, you need to have registered RAM. Is that true? Is registered RAM required for all Duel MP boards?

That said, if you were building an AMD Duel Proc Server, its primary use would be a game server, secondary use would be a Win2k AS setup, specifically for learning. Not to support a huge network. Maximum clients on the network would be 3. The only requirement hardware wise would be the CPU's. My friend is donating his 1.2 ghz MP's.

With the CPU being 2 1.2 Ghz MP's, what would you recommend the rest of the system look like? Please include Make and Model # for the hardware, specifically the Motherboard.

Thanks

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that on most motherboards if you only use 2 DIMMs you don't need registered RAM. Howerver, if you use more than 2 you must use registered for all slots. Later.

I have the MSI K7D Master, and do not use registered RAM. I run 2 256MB sticks of Corsair XMS 2700 with no problems.
Q: What RAM can I use with my dual AMD rig?

A: The AMD 760MP(X) chipset supports up to 2 dimms / 4 banks of unbuffered DDR SDRAM and up to 4GB?s of registered DDR SDRAM. Both of Tyan?s motherboards require registered DDR.

The K7D Master has been a solid, stable board for me. I have an older revision, so I would suggest the K7D Master L.
I have run this board as the basis of my main workstation for more than a few weeks now, constantly running RC5 and encoding audio and video (MPEG1, 2 and DivX) like crazy. Even with an Nvidia videocard, ATi videocard and Matrox videocard, I can honestly say that I have not experienced one BSOD or system failure since I installed the board. That says a lot to me considering the issues I've had in the past with various drivers, etc.
Be sure to check out the 2CPU.com Forums for lots of good info.

Totally agree with Technonut on that MSI board, its the same one I have. Actually, I'm using that board with Athlon 1800XPs (yes, not MPs) without registered DDR ram. The board is very stable and I'm quite pleased with how its put up so far.

Here goes another vote for MSI K7DMaster-L! Great board!

I am running mine w. 2x MP1800+ and 2 sticks of 256Mb Apacer PC2100 cas2 RAM. Those are non-registered non-ECC and work fine!
Only ones that NEED registered ECC RAM are TYAN boards, so if you have no plans to buy ECC mermory stay away from TYAN boards. All others run fine with up to 2 sticks of non-ECC RAM!
