I recently installed Win2k(already was running winME), I am now duel booting the two. I was just wondering if it was possible to import the winme registry into windows2k, and if so how.

I'll assume this is a stupid question cause no one is answering :D. In any case, gonna bump it up once just in case, then let it die.

It's not really a very good idea. Although on the surface WinME and Win2K look quite similar, they are very different under the hood.

Win2K's registry contains certain parts that the WinME registry does not....ie the Security Hive.

Certain settings such as nVidia's Coolbits and other small tweaks are not usually platform specific, although it's always best to set each item separately in each OS to prevent keys from writing to the wrong places.

I'm guessing here, but If you tried to import WinME registry into Win2k you would get an error message similar to "WTF is wrong with you, go learn."

WinME and Win2k have two totally different registry structures. You would definitely corrupt Win2k by trying to load a WinME registry into it.

yes i am not quite THAT computer illiterate:). i was curious if windows 2k had a tool or anything designed with the sole intent of importing portions of the winme/win9x registry (more specifically, the programs), not the actual whole registy. i am aware of the differences :).

looks like i am just going to have to reinstall everything.

well it wouldnt be that hard to accomplilsh
just export from winme the reg keys you want, then edit that reg file and copy the contents to a .txt file or what not
then boot to win2k and either manually add the keys and strings or export a random reg entry and edit it with the info on the ext file
makes sense, no?

[edit] i dont suggest you try to simply copy/paste things this way though as a way to get around reinstalling. when you install programs, often files are coppied to system folders and such and it would be very difficult to copy every file and reg entry. [/edit]
