Dude, you bought a Dell?

Well, even the best laid plans fall to the wayside sometimes..lol.

After collecting most of my parts for a new build, I stumbled upon a deal I couldn't pass up at the Dell Outlet. I know, I know... but the parts I had bought cost more than this system with a 2 year warranty, and instead of a 6600GT, I now have a X800XT PE... so as far as performance, I think I made out alright.

Seriously though, for 1179 shipped I think I got a bargain. I'm still not sure DellOutlet didn't have a pricing error on this particular system, as I can't find another one similar to sell on Ebay for close to the same $$$.

Dell Dimension XPS Gen 3

Pentium 4 Processor 560 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 800 FSB)
512mb PC2-4200 DDR2 533mhz ram
120GB 7200rpm 8mb cache s-ata hard drive
48X CD RW Drive
16x DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
256MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X800 XT PE
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (D) Sound Card
Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Optical Mouse Desktop Combo
Windows XP Pro

So no overclocking for awhile (have to replace mobo and case), and I will have to spend 3 days removing crap software I don't want off it...lol. All in all though, I will be gaming by Friday with a pretty solid machine for my 1200 bucks!

Thanks for listening, blast away...

Good system at a good price. That is why so many people like Dell's deals when they are available. Plop in another 512 MB when prices are good on DDR2 and you'll be set for quite a while.

A format and reinstallation shouldn't take 3 days though.

From my experience their customer service isnt exactly spectacular but not horrible either. I like their hardware though, pretty well built. Very happy with my new Inspiron :)

Seems like a good deal. The CPU and Video care alone almost cost what you paid. Its a Dell tho, so -1.

I dont know about yall, but when I saw the case for the Dell XPS, it made me want one. They look pretty nice. But that was before my Mac came into my life. :p

They are still nice computers though.

And the case looks pretty damn neat, will see how functional the clamshell is!

I would compare them more to Sony than GE. Higher end stuff is better than the lower end. For the money performance is pretty good but most importantly their products are rock solid stable. Turn it on and youll know itll work. If youve fiddled around with enough hardware as most of you here probably have sometimes you just dont want to deal with the headaches and just want the damn thing to work.

For anyone with a DDR2 based motherboard, I found Crucial Ballistix at www.excaliberpc.com for a darn nice price. 99 dollars shipped per 512 stick of 3-3-3-10 pc-4200 ddr2 533mhz, quite a bit cheaper than anywhere else I saw the lower timing DDR2!

Nice. I've almost built my last 2 computers, but Dell always ended up being quite a bit cheaper - and I prefer preloads. I'd rather spend a bit of time removing crap than hunting for drivers.

I'm pretty sure the 3.6 P4 with a X800XT PE will outrun what I was going to build (3200+ A64 with 6600GT) by quite a large margin. From everything I have absorbed from this site, your GPU is far far more important in gaming than the processor.

My first Intel chip in 3+ years, Guess I will see how they are now..lol.

Thanks for the info/advice everyone.

Lol! Sorry. I am not very familiar with games, since I am not much of a gamer.
