Dude, where's my SLI connector?

So, I purchased two PNY 6600 GTs and a Tyan K8WE. I did this to run 4 monitors simultaneously, but as long as I have this setup, it should be great for SLI. The MOBO supports two PCI express at 16X each and is SLI capable. Both cards are SLI capable.

So where?s my f?ing SLI connector?

There wasn?t one connector between the three items. That is a little disappointing.

Where do I go from here?

Do I have to go out and buy something like this now?

Are all the connector cables the same?

Any one have any extras of these? I hear many cards come with one of these connectors in each card, so it stands to reason that there would be a lot of people with two cards and two connectors when they only need one.

Thanks for your help!

The connector is supposed to be supplied with SLI capable motherboards, not the cards. (edit the reason why is because the spacing between slot on the motherboards is variable, so the SLI connector needs to fit the slot spacing).

Check Tyans website to verify they supply an SLI connector with their motherboard (I think at least one SLI board considers it an "optional extra", but that was a dual opteron board IIRC) - just like MSI considered full analog outputs for audio on their nForce1 board "optional" - fume.

If the board was meant to ship with an SLi connector, I'd then contact the seller, ask why it was excluded from the package and request they ship you one at their expense.

Otherwise you may have to buy it seperately.

The Tyan K8WE is a dual Opteron board...😛

That would explain it then. I had a feeling the board without the connector may have been a Tyan, but, I don't follow Opteron or Tyan very closely, just vaugely remembered the details.

I guess for $540 they couldn't afford to include one!

Grrr.

Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate the information. I will call Tyan tomorrow and see what needs to be done.

Annoying isn't it? Especially when the motherboard is so pricey to begin with. Like I said above its how a lot of MSI K7N420 Pro owners felt when it was discovered there was only stereo analog out on their MCP-T enabled nForce1.

What's the point of companies pulling lame stunts like this? Do they enjoy pissing off their customers?

Tyan doesn't include one with the earlier versions of the K8WE, they've announced that they will supply one with the new versions of the board.

Also, with SLI, you will not be able to run four monitors concurently. You'll be maxed out at one unless nVidia fixes this. You'll have to run the cards seperately.

I just ordered the dang thing 2 days ago! And I'm pretty sure it wasn't the first shipment the store had received. So maybe they will include it in future boards. Bleh.

Gstanfor, yeah, it is irritating. Especially to find out now.

Kensai, I have heard of that limitation and my hope is that it is easy (as in switching back in forth IN SOFTWARE) to switch from SLI to seperate. If it can be done in the advanced properties of the video driver then I could just enable it for gaming and click it off for "work." I certainly hope it is this easy/ fast!

If it requires a reboot or messing with the physical SLI connector each time, then I don't see too much SLI use in my future.

. . .

YOU SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED THE SLI CONNECTOR, TYAN!!!!

Welcome to the world of SLI. It wil require a reboot to disable SLI and re-enable multiple monitor support.

Update:

I talked to Tyan today and they were very nice. They said they intended to ship the SLI connectors with the boards but were unable to due to yada yada yada.

However, they took my information and will ship me one at their expense when they get them.

A much better resolutions, all in all, than I had expected.

I dind't think you could run multiple monitors in sli. DOn't you have to turn it off and then use the card setup like you would with an agp card + a pci card? If that's right, you wouldn't need a connector.
