It'd be so much easier just to strap him down to a board in front of City Hall with his mouth wired open for a week or so and just let everyone in the town come by and pee on him.

Wasteful.

There is at least a perceived difference from my perspective," Shaff said. "I could be wrong on that, but the reality is our customers don't anticipate drinking water that's been contaminated by some yahoo who decided to pee into a reservoir."

His perspective is wrong. Instead, every time they make a deal about it, people re-learn that they're drinking water with goose shit in it.

"The open reservoirs hold water that's already been treated and goes directly into mains for distribution to customers."

38 million gallons of water is exposed to open air and the elements for who-knows-how-long, and they go ballistic when one kid pees in it?

Maybe this is more of a publicity thing than an actual concern, since he was caught on camera.

i find that hard to believe that open water would go directly to our tap, youd get all sorts of nasty crap in your sink

So basically that reservoir is the biggest toilet in human history that is about to be flushed.

I read this too I don't get why isn't the water filtered at some level and why is there an enormous vat of previously filtered water sitting out in the open? Personally I'd be more concerned about someone throwing a bunch of Arsenic or the gas processing stuff that can spoil millions of gallons of water.

There's people here that won't swim in our lake because it is "murky" and has some algae growth when really warm. They seem shocked when I tell them where their water comes from for baths, cooking, drinking, etc.

You've drank pee already. Get over it.

Dumb, but not such a big deal. The water isn't being wasted. It just goes back in the river that probably supplied it in the first place. All they are really out is the cost of processing.

Edit: And for some perspective, Columbus treated an average of over 200 million gallons per day in 2011. 38MM isn't a major catastrophe.

Hell they always find dead animals (and once in a while a dead human) in the canals around here.

So, animals don't pee in the reservoir? I would assume there's some bird poop in there at least. That's why we have water filtration and chlorine treatment.

This is Portland, Oregon in a non-drought. The water can be replaced, especially at this time of the year.

Which is why the Feds are requiring these kinds of reservoirs to be covered or replaced (at great expensive). Open reservoirs of treated water are more common than most people think, and so are events requiring them to be flushed.

again?
This is ridicolous.

I also find open drinking water reservoirs weird (here they're closed or water is pumped from underground) but I guess they're skimping on infrastructure.
Still, if the analysis says it's fine, leave it. Birds have been shitting salmonella all over it for 3 weeks anyway.

"It's easy to replace those 38 million gallons of water," Shaff said. "We're not in the arid Southwest; we're not in drought-stricken parts of Texas or Oklahoma."

And, they are moving to replace their reserviors with underground ones.

So, this was probably done to save themselves from lawsuits by the junkies who will claim they got hepitities from the city's reserviors that were peed in.

Wow, I thought open reservoirs going directly to your tap was a relic of the Roman era and we've since progressed. Guess not.

Don't understand how this wasted the water. Not as if animals don't us it as a toilet and who knows what else could natirally fall in there so not as if it's being pumped directly into you house pipes.

1st the kid is a idiot and i have no trouble with the county/state whatever billing him.

though to dump 38 million gallons over a small amount of pee is insane. I am sure it has dead animals and animal pee and shit in it.

what did you think it did? lol

I thought treated water which would feed directly to homes is stored in sealed/secure tanks, such as those water towers all around my area. Treatment plants would continuously keep said tanks topped off, or at least fill reservoirs which would follow a filtration/minor secondary treatment which could be done on demand as it is fed to homes.

City dumped the water to make an example of the situation.

I hope they take a minute and rake all the old condoms and needles out of the reservoir after it's drained.
