me either but aren't they smoking that synthetic crap?

no, this is a plant called salvia divinorum (spelling may be approximate). although the pure plant is usually not very strong; people usually smoke extracts- infusions of the active ingredient onto the natural plant material. so, assuming a safe extraction method, it is 'natural'- just a lot more powerful. and the high vaporization temp means a torch lighter and a bong are typical methods of smoke delivery.

the 'synthetics' you refer to are synthetic cannabinoids, i'd assume. they are very much like pot with more possible adverse effects. it's possible to have a bad time on them, but you don't lose touch with reality like when you use a hallucinagen (lsd, 'magic' mushrooms, salvia).

i've tried salvia and i've had a bad mushroom trip. the latter lasted a hell of a lot longer and was certainly not pleasurable but i'd STILL recommend it over salvia. just remember that if you're going to trip, HAVE SUPERVISION. period. hallucinagens can be a fucklot more dangerous than pot or alcohol depending on the person and the situation.

I've never got salvia to work, I've heard crazy stories though. And seen people take it. They basically act like this guy, not necessarily jumping out of the window but they do need supervision. We had to keep a friend from running of the house and doing who knows what when he got outside. I've heard experiences vary, one that sounded cool was a friend said everything turned into cartoon animation.

i tried it maybe 3 times. each time felt pretty similar- i got 'stuck.' i suspect that may be the origination of the word 'tripping'- the same things appear to happen over and over again (i can remember everyone laughing, but it was like a short looping animated gif). other people i did it with described it as 'i felt like i was falling off the edge of the earth.'

it probably didn't work for you for the reasons i mentioned- most people are using extracts and you need a hot flame (and something to cool the resulting hot smoke). but once you manage to get a lungful of the active ingredient- oh shit you know it. fwiw i and the multiple friends i have who have tried it only refer to salvia as 'THAT shit' and none of us are interested in trying it again.

I've done it maybe 5 or 6 times (always supervised), but I've never had a bad trip. I usually have some kind of out-of-body experience.

Don't let this video give salvia a bad reputation. They really should have had a sitter, and they would have known that had they done any research on these. If they fuck something or someone up, that's their fault and responsibility. It's the same way with alcohol.

again, though- you can't compare a slow, building drunkeness to a sudden complete break with reality. yeah, the former obviously can and has caused a lot of bad shit, but i just feel it is necessary to warn the unexperienced that a bad trip could still kill you (not from OD); and as someone who has done a lot of shit and felt the effects of FAR too much of a hallucinagenic drug in his system, i, again, simply want to warn the uninformed and inexperienced.

A radio DJ in Canada did a hit of this stuff to show how bad it is, and that it should be made illegal.
He recorded the video and put it online.. Quite the trip.. Their studio is on 3rd floor so good thing he didn't jump out the window.

After watching the porn bannered extended video, I'm leaning towards fake on this one.

I'm pretty sure anyone who's done salvia will tell you that half the shit he's saying is sooo fake and he's just exaggerating the effects for some drama.
He didn't even smoke that much. If he got really high off of it, he wouldn't be talking and communicating less than a minute into the trip. So he had a small hit and 3 minutes into it he's still saying how hardcore it is. Usually after 3 minutes of taking a small hit like that, you'd feel really euphoric and calm in the afterglow. . Salvia is an opiate that calms you down when the psychedelic effects wears off.

An opiate is a drug that was made from the sap of a scored poppy bulb. Salvia is a sage. They have nothing to do with each other.

But, the radio dj does seem to be hamming it up.

I misspoken, I meant opioid which is a class of neurotransmitters named after opiates. But apparently they both act on the same class of receptors... :hmm:

Research has shown that salvinorin A is a potent and selective κ-Opioid (kappa-Opioid) receptor agonist.

It's a common mistake. K-Opioid drugs and MU-Opioid drugs (Opiates & others) have very different effects, though.

I was aware of the two different receptor subtypes. I never really read into them though. However, my experience with salvia was that it had a euphoric afterglow that felt similar to vicodin to me. My friends tell me the same too. Wikipedia says that some people get dysphoric from a K opioid agonist, so the guy could've felt like crap.

But some people feel like crap from alcohol or cigs too.
