I find it hard to believe that he can just take the plane out without anyone noticing... doesnt he need clearance to take off?

Well they noticed it was gone at 5am. No, he does not need clearance to take off. I assume the weather permitted him to take out with out confirming with the tower (clear night and can see other plane lights). He should have flown to mexico or something.

Thats not even close to funny. Looking at the heightened security and panic level over terrorism...the guy could have been shot down.

The tower is probably isn't manned 24/7.

Saint Augustine Airport.
 
the tower at St. Augustine airport closes at 9pm so no clearance to takeoff is required after that time.

I hope the FAA takes his license away forever.
