My new g/f is Chinese and she took me to some "homestyle cookin" restaurant tonight. I guess she figured as a beloved patriot I'd recoil from eating the "real" stuff.... honey, after 11 years in the army and eating whatever the locals shot that night during overseas deployments, there ain't nothing you can serve I can't or won't eat. Yes, the server did look at me like I was a barbarian and surprised as hell when I ordered the tongues (in Chinese no less), but c'est la vie.

Next time I'm going to return the favor and serve her all the unusual American foods... chitlins, scrapple, etc.... any suggestions for truly off the wall American cuisine?

The idea of chitlins is so incredibly disgusting, I almost can't believe it's a "dish".

I like deep fried chitlins chinese style but some places don't clean them well enough. Ten years ago, my sister ordered some deep fried chitlins in Hong Kong but it wasn't clean enough because my sister thought that they were stuffed with minced pork or seafood. Nope, it was filled with partially decomposed straw or hay...

Headcheese sandwiches might make her flinch, although the idea of scrapple and chitlins is pretty good.
If your a hunter squirrel or ground hog might offer up an interesting dish.

start with a waldorf salad.
then throw an egg on a giant bacon cheeseburger with some BBQ sauce. (make sure you stuff some fries in there as well) crush up funyons and sprinkle over top.
deep fry everything possible. apply easy cheese liberally.
make jello jigglers and lather them with cool whip and canned fruits.

chitlins are intestines of pig

never had scrapple, but the dictionary says "a seasoned mixture of ground meat (as pork) and cornmeal set in a mold and served sliced and fried"

Opposum is a dish in some parts of the south...

y'know how hot dogs are basically leftovers from more choice meats? well....scrapple is what you get from the leftovers from making hotdogs.
