Is there something wrong with that?

No, I think that's great. Post back with pics.

Why not spend a bit more and get the 1098.

I didn't see the 1098 in Person, the dealer didn't have it there.

nooo! go for the 1098!!!

The 999 has generally been like marmite (vegemite) insofar that people either love it or hate it. I was always a fan of the legendary 998 and was p!ssed off when ducati brought in the 'cyclops' style. Thankfully, due to popular demand, they've relised the error of their ways and moved back to their classic styling with the throbber-inducing 1098. I've spoken to people who have ridden it and they claim it's either the best bike ever made or in the 10 ten at least. Wait it out for this bike.

having said that, if you're after a 1000 V-twin, have you considered the Aprilia RSV mille or (one of my favourites) the Honda SP1 or even SP2?

If you fancied going for one extra cylinder and going for a 3-cylinder (the engine was voted best engine ever by bike magazines) go for what I went for, the Triumph Daytona 955i is a simply awesoem bike. Just to brag, here's some photos of my actual bike (I've added some aftermarket bits):

one
two
three
four
five

Keep us posted as to what you go for!!!

hot bike. one question. seating position looks really far back. Id assume you'd basically have to be lying down while riding the bike. does it get uncomfortable after a while?

Someone already asked and you didn't answer - is this your first bike?

A literbike for a first bike is a horrible choice. What's a used 999 go for, $10,000? That's way, way too much to pay for a first bike.

If it's not your first bike, then ignore those statements. I've heard Ducati maintenance can get pricey, so consider that.

Edit: whoops, you did actually answer that. What bike did you have previously?

a lot of money just for cruising around on...these things are track bikes really, tuned for high performance and extremely aggressive riding. To me, and I have ridden quite a while, and yes I have one now, these are a waste unless you can really utilize their intent. They are NOT comfortable riding around town and showing off...after a while they become quite uncomfortable. There IS a compromise, a sport touring bike will have plenty of juice and handling (not as much as the track bikes), have lower insurance and will be much more comfortable...is it really worth it to pay an extra 10 grand for a look and to ride a bike that is really designed to be ridden on a track competitively?

your money though... just some thoughts... bikes are great, and in the right hands can be a lot of fun..but most turds these days ride stupid in traffic and on the street, giving them a bad name and making even more dangerous for other riders.

Get good gear, never ride without it, enjoy your bike, and if you have not take one of the safety courses, it usually is worth it and will lower your insurance.

Ride Safely

a lot of that is from the photo persepctive, but yeah, you have some of your weight on your wrists which after a fair amount of time begin to ache, as most supersports do. I'm only 5' 8, though so have to lean a fair amount. I've heard of 6'5 people riding the 955 comfortably. All bikes like this require this sort of stance; the ducatti will be similar. I tried a 675, but that was way less comfrotable, with the majority or your torso weight on the wrists. When you're on a track this doesn't matter.
On a weekend I'll go out for 3 hour rides, and it's fine for that.

If you've not heard a 3cylinder engine, there's a really short vid here... the sounds really is second to none. Less whiney that an inline four (eg YZF R1), but not as much of a thumper like the ducatis. Just thinking about it makes my skin tingle....

I moved from a ~30HP 125cc up to a ~150HP 955i in one jump. You've just got to be careful, and *always* take it easy.

Ducatis are unreliable. I friend had a Multistrada, and he said that the wiring for the instruments lights didn't have any water shielding, so whenever ti rained, they would short. This is the joy of italian bikes! That's why I'd say go for the Honda SP1 or the triumph!

I hadn't really considered them before, but I really like the way the new Sprint ST looks. Same for the new Tiger. I think the Tiger would be a hell of a fun bike around town. Then of course there's the Speed Triple.

The only Triumph dealer nearby here just closed down. I think there's one up in Detroit. Not that I'm in the market for a new bike anyway. The next thing I buy will probably be a V-Strom, and that won't be for another year or so. I ride a little Honda 450 now, so moving up to a 1050cc bike seems like a big jump for me.

a couple fo others for your considerations if you want something italian and unusual that turns heads:

Motto Guzzi Breva 1100 with ti's lateral V-twin

or the Moto Morini 1200 whihc looks stunning.

Finally, if you're after something truly thumping, with max torque at 3,500RPM, but with japanese reliability, check out the Yamaha MT-01. Comfortable, and really looks like a shed-load of fun!

Just don't get a harley!

I really like those Moto-Guzzi bikes. The Brevia 750 would be a pretty nice upgrade from my current bike and it looks fun as hell. I've heard mechanics are kind of hard to come by, so I'm going to have to get more comfortable with motorcycle maintenance. A guy at another forum I read has a Brevia and he likes it, so it's probably a bike I'll consider when it comes to buying my next one.

I hereby raise the B.S. (PAB?) card. Noone buys a 999 w/o doing research; asking people what they think about it only makes you look lik an attention whore.

Here's my take on it, though:

Unless you've been riding sportbikes for a long time, don't do it. Ducatis are expensive to maintain and the desmo drive is a PITA to fix. Also the parts are uber expesnsive and quite honestly, if you just started riding, there's no point for you to get it.
