I'm sure its been asked before, but i'd like some fresh opinions. Which would perform better overall and in games: A dual Opteron based system or a s939 3500+?

Depends if the game supports multithreading. Supposedly Doom 3 is going to support it. However im not 100% sure. Safest bet would be the 3500+ anyway and go dual core in 2006 or so. a 3500+ will still run games plenty fast. My vote for 3500+

What speed Opterons are you asking about?
The results won't be the same for dual 240's as they are with dual 250's. :p

Most likely if you go with two slower dullies no they won't be as fast. A single CPU should do justice. Though if the motherboard has OCing features even though most Dual's don't seem to be feature filled. You could get those opertons pretty high up there. Either way I think going the single option may be a little cheaper after registered RAM and should perform better aswell. Though if you plan on doing gaming and encoding or something at the same time just go for the dualie as well.

If the game isn't SMP aware and doesn't take advantage of the dual CPUs, the single CPU will serve you better - purely on the fact that for the money you'd spend on the two Opterons and registered RAM, you could have a faster clock CPU and/or put the money towards a better video card or water cooling (and then OC the sucker more to extend the lead). That said, the majority of games on the market do not support dual procs.

I vote 3500+. :)
