If I understand correctly(please correct me if I am wrong) the only difference between an Athlon XP and an Athlon MP is AMD's assurance that the MP is multiprocessor capable. Given that, what risks do I run if I decide to use XPs in a SMP system.

Well, as has been discussed numerous times in the mobo and CPU forum :), there IS a risk that the 2 processors won't play well together. Even though some people have had no problems with using plain Athlons in an MP setup, MANY of us have had issues. Problems have ranged from stability issues all the way to the system not booting. Replacing with certified MP processors has always cured the problem.

It is still up in the air as to whether the MP chips are just tested to play well with others or if there are actually differences between the XP and the MP.

Of course this was between regular Athlons and MP's. It would make sense if the XP's play better together than the regular Athlons do.
However, some people have been reporting on other boards that SMP support in the XP's is specifically disabled but no one has been able to confirm that yet.

I do plan on trying 2 XP 1800+'s in my dual rig once I can get ahold of them. If they don't work, I'll just sell them to someone.
