I'm happy with mine. Only negatives: the server motherboard (mine is Asrock) is a little quirky, like the number lock light on the keyboard turns off after a while, and it boots up fairly slow. Other negative is it gobbles up electricity at idle. And lastly, depending on what you are doing - all those cores may not be as useful as you think. So research the software you use to determine if having more than 8 cores will make that much of a difference.

But for the price, it is hard to beat as long as you sometimes need the cores.

I bought one and was able to get an X79 board for $200. I considered doing a second one as a workstation (video editing, etc) but couldn't find a board under $300. It runs great and I think was a very smart buy. I already had DDR3 lying around. Cost me less than $320 for an 8-core, 15-thread beast for my media server. I love it.

Mine idles at 90W, which is only 20W more than my FX8350.

Maintaining a webserver, database server (postgres), fileserver, 3-4 test VM's different linux /windows versions, 2-3 different coding envoriments, backup envoriment, suberversion and mercurial... more i forget now.

Today I am multipurposing installs to serve two or three use cases(on old laptops lying around no less) but it has proven to be a peach when upgrading, one thing breaking the other etc. For my needs compartmentalization seems to be key.

Gonna need a huuuge disk array to go with that too.. 8T raid 5 for 24T and some RST in front? Do RST work in a virtualized env?

(just the thought of getting rid of those old laps, clearing out a table mmmm nice..)

Best deal by far :

Intel S2600CP2J dual-2011 Motherboard - $175
2x Intel Xeon E5-2670 (8c/16t - 2.6GHz) - $130
8x 8GB ECC RAM - $85

http://www.natex.us/product-p/intels2600cp2j-custom.htm
http://www.natex.us/product-p/64gb-am472d3ld4p13c9ec.htm

16c/32t, 64GB ECC + mobo for $390, ie. less than a 6700K + mobo combo at MicroCenter

Wow, can't beat that with a stick! Nearly impossible to find a single-socket board to support a Xeon for less than the total cost of the bundle there! BTW, the 128gb 8x16 is almost $100 cheaper.

I... I think I just found my render box. Need a case.
Edit: Didn't check the second link. I was looking at the bundle drop-downs, which had 64gb at $280 and 128 at $190.

Been articles about this since last spring...I was doing a lot of research into a single e5-2670 and found a x79 sabertooth for $180...Decided to pass as a new system with a broadwell-e would only cost $300 more...Much rather have x99 than x79 at this point, especially since I make my systems last for 5 years. Still extremely tempting..

Where the hell do you find

2x Intel Xeon E5-2670 (8c/16t - 2.6GHz) - $130

My amazon / ebay skills must be lacking ...
On the same site (you can select mobo + CPU options). That's a little expensive actually, since IINM you can get E5-2670s for ~$50 a piece on eBay.

F*** it, I've decided to jump on the dual Xeon bandwagon and grab a pair of 2670s!

Does anyone have any board recommendations? Preferably something cheap and with plenty of PCIE slots (I suspect I'll need a lot of expansion cards due to C602 chipset's slightly dated standards).

As a hobby project, I'll probably install the setup in an old E-ATX converted Apple Mac Pro case.

Thread problary belongs in general by now. Anyway, for new I am looking at ~350$ (denmar) .. so I am looking for used/refurbished here as well, in the spirit of keeping cost down..

I LOVE my dual X5690s...I don't think I could build another high end rig without going dual socket. The additional CPU horsepower and RAM limits are so nice to have.
