Dual Xeon server motherboard question

We are putting together a dual Xeon server at my buisness (the Xeons were free - so we are definitely using them). I was looking at Tyan's selection of dual Xeon server motherboards, and I ran into a question I can't seem to adiquately answer.

I've looked mainly at 2 chipsets - i7501 and i7505. The i7505 ones claim dual channel memory, whereas the 7501 doesn't. The i7501 variants all have onboard video though, which is a big plus in their favor, where the i7505s have AGP slots.

The dual channel thing is the only thing that really makes me wonder here. Does it perform significantly better because of the dual channel? Since there will be 2 CPUs I want to make sure I get the best performance out of this I can get. I also wondered if the i7501 supported Hypterthreading. I don't really see it mentioned in either one, but I'd assume I'd rather have it enabled for both processors if I can (yes the Xeons I have do have hyperthreading - 2.8 512Cache 533 variety)

Suggestions are very welcome.

NOT having dual channel will definately cripple the performance of P4(Xeon). Both 7501 and 7505 do support hyperthreading and dual channel memory. 7505 is also used in high end workstations as it has AGP8x whereas 7501 doesn't. Both chipsets will suite you fine!

What is the FSB speed of your Xeons and cache size? If they are the 400mhz, 512k cache ones and depending on your budget you might look into this board:

Otherwise either Tyan board is a good choice. If you are building a biz critical server try and stay with the established brands; Tyan, SuperMicro or Intel. Asus, Iwill and the rest make great enthusiast-level boards, but it is my experience for servers to stick with proven makers. Hope this helps and have fun builiding whatever you decide to build.

So he can play games on the server . 😉
Or later he could use the mobo for a workstation.
