I have the option to pickup a cheap setup (~$80). Dual x5650, 24gb ram. Supermicro board, so no overclock that I can see. X8DLT-IF.

Money is tight. What could I expect to see for handbrake. Encoding bd mkvs to mp4. Slow settings, Constant, 18 1080p.

Current pc is fx-8320e overclocked to 4.0, 8gb ram. This setup takes forever. 9+ hours for typical movie

If you know the guy selling it, could you ask to run a test job on it? Then you'd know for sure how much faster it would be.

If I were you, I'd buy it. It's a great deal, and it should be a lot faster than your current setup. Even if it isn't that much faster, I bet you could sell those parts on eBay for a nice profit... hell, the RAM alone would probably fetch more than $85.

Should have said, the ram is registered ecc.

No chance of getting tests.

Update:

Build 90% complete. Need extra cables and such to finish it up.

Dropped in an old hd to test the system. Scored 1328 in Cinebench R15.

Very happy. Two Evo 212s are a tight fit, but working great. Running Aida64, temps didn’t get over 65C. Ambient room is about 78F.

The Northbridge. Man, that gets hot. Got to over 80C just while I was sitting in bios looking for actual cpu temps. Temporarily mounted a 60mm 40cfm 48dba (its loud!) fan. Now temps never get over 56C. Lowest I ever saw was 52C, so I know it’s cool. Gotta find a respectable option to swap in.

Thanks again for helping me decide to purchase this beast. Can’t wait to finish it off and give handbrake a beating.
