Dual Slot Cooler for the ATI 4850

I wonder if these coolers work with the 4850s? They showed up kind of late in the x1x00 series reign to be useful, but did fill the important niche of outside case exhaust coolers that didn't sound like a jet engine. I have one for my wife's PC and they're actually in stock, if a little pricey.

From the looks of it, no. There are some chips towards the back of the 4850 board that need to be cooled, about where the fan is on that cooler. You could get some mem sinks or something, but getting ones that fit under that fan might be iffy.

The best GPU coolers are ones designed to cool the GPU first - designs where heatpipes can actually perform most efficiently in drawing the heat away from the GPU. The whole idea behind an exhaust system does make a lot of sense, but in practice it just isn't nearly as efficient, otherwise they wouldn't be consistently outperformed by aftermarket cooling.

Besides, unless your case has absolutely horrendous airflow to begin with, the airflow should already naturally sweep over the video card and right out the back of the case anyways, regardless of whether the cooler is specifically designed to do so.
