Dual slot cards are usually higher end, enthusiast class products. However many cards ship in both dual and single slot. It comes down to a trade off between the amount of heat and noise produced and space taken up in the case and how many input/outputs there are.

The biggest drawback ofa dual slot is that it eats two slots on your mobo, the biggest drawback of a single is that they are sometimes noisier and hotter. However it varies from card to card.

One main advantage of some Dual Slot solutions is that the gpu cooler is designed to expel the hot air directly out of the rear of the case. This isn't to say that all dual slot solutions do this but it is something to consider.

A dual slot solution also may be an advantage in that a larger more efficient heatsink/fan design can be used for better performance as well as many times being less noisy in operation.

My single slot HD 3870 blow into the case and yes, the fan is noisy. Its offset by my ginormous sidefan on my case. I went single slot because I actually need the PCIX slot that my previous 2900 Pro blocked.

You have a PCIx (PCI extended) slot on that P35 motherboard? Or is it a PCIe (PCI express) slot?
