Dual SATA Raid won't work with ATA?

I have the same problem.

But I was thinking that I could get one of those adapter things that converts my drive to the SATA interface.

I'm just not sure how this might affect performance

Yeah, I just had that same idea. I really want a 74GB WD Raptor ($200), but for less money I could get 3 more 80GB WD Special Editions (I have one already) and Raid them in 0+1 with 160GB of storage! That would probably be even faster than the Raptor. Does anyone know if SATA -> PATA adapters would degrade performance or stability?

And I just realized this is in the wrong forum. Sorry :p

I found ONE athlon64motherboard (Gigabyte) that has parallel raid as well

But I am hesitant to get that since the memory compatibility seems to be poor according to that article on toms hardware guide.

Building machines for family Xmas presents, I'd sometimes pick no-frills motherboards like the D865PERL and D865PERLX. Neither of those models had RAID0 for the SATA plugs, and the plan was to use ATA100 drives, anyway. For one of them I bought a Promise FastTrak TX2000 ( or 4000?) ATA133 RAID PCI card, and my sister-in-law is happier'n a pig in poop with it.

But the PRomise cards can cost nearly $100 bucks.

I noticed that ZipZoomFly and NewEgg were doing a thriving business selling a Taiwanese "off-brand" controller. I've had contact with "power-user" enthusiast stores with testing labs, who recommended some Taiwanese manufactures for net cards and routers (like TrendNet) and I was never disappointed.

The "HIGHPOINT" RocketRaid 100 card costs $45 (as of two weeks ago). And it not only appears to be reliable for PATA drives, it may actually be faster and more efficient than the PRomise card.
