Hey guys! A little help if possible:

I'll try to explain as clearly as possible:)

I have 2 routers in my network, and I am running 1 Domain sesrver for resource sharing only........

From my cable modem, it connects to the WAN side of an SMC router with print server (the SMC is upstairs),
the SMC sends out an IP (via DHCP) to a D-Link router (on the WAN side) with wireless (located in the basement),
the D-Link sends out an IP (via DHCP) to wireless devices (a laptop and a PDA), as well as to 2 wired workstations (my main PC and the Domain server),
I recently had to move the server upstairs to the room the SMC is in.

Here's the problem:confused:

The domain server is no longer visible in Windows networking. From my main rig, I can ping it, I can create a shortcut to it's IP to share resources, but it is not recognized as a domain server per se:disgust:

The domain server as well, can not "see" anything that is getting an IP from the D-Link! It's as if it can only see forward, not backward in my networking scheme.

I'd like to get the domain server back into the mix, but maintain the wiring as it is.

Any thoughts peeps?

TY in advance....if you need any further clarity in my explanation, plz LMK?

Ed, did you have any workstations upstairs that could see the domain server before you moved it upstairs? Are all the computers connected to the d-link, and is the smc just there for print serving, except now you have moved the server there?
I think you are running into the firewall features of the d-link, and you may have to disable them or route protocols through the d-link that are normally blocked for security.

Skyking,

There were NO PCs connected to the SMC (SMC 7004ABR) before I moved the server to it. It was only sending out 1 IP to the D-Link (DI-713).

I think you are dead on about the firewall features, but the SMC is rather lacking in firewall features though

It has deny ping from WAN side, and a few others.

As it stands now, The SMC sends out an IP to the server, and the D-link only.

Do you, or any other member reading this, know the protocols I need to set up on the server to get it to see, or be seen by the other PCs getting IPs from the D-Link?

OR,

Maybe I should set the SMC to set the Server IP as a DMZ.....would that work?

Thanks for the reply:)

The dmz of the smc will expose your domain server to the outside, not the inside. Not good. The holdup is the d-link. it is what is between your server and the rest of your clients.

I was gonna post that above when I mentioned it...but ya never know;)

Thanks for confirming that:)

I do know quite a bit about networking, but this is a silly one IMO;)

Your bestest option is to disable dhcp and use one of the regular ports on the dlink. turn it into a Wireless access port, and switch.
The WAN connection is EVIL for your domain:p
That way, the firewall rules of the d-link are forever null and void:)

If you are saying it is as easy as taking the SMC from the WAN to the LAN on the D-Link...I will be very angry with myself:|

I was kicking myself trying to figure out how to just turn the D-Link into a standalone switch!

I musta had a braincramp:Q

Thanks and I will post my results!

Appreciate your time Skyking:)

If I turn off DHCP on the D-Link...will it still dole out an IP to a wireless device? Will it use the DHCP from the SMC to give IPs to wireless devices?

Never tried this...just a thought;)

You have it now.:)
The SMC will hand out IP's, and the d-link will be a switch, period. This includes the wireless side of things.

Dangit:Q

Did not work:|

I put the cable from the SMC into a LAN port on the D-Link...and nothing. Using another LAN port on the D-Link, I tried to release and renew my IP from my main rig...and nothing...nada..squat:(

I have a feeling that the D-Link does not want to work as a stand-alone switch. I even tried keeping the SMC side on the WAN side of the D-Link...no renew whatsoever! All the time, DHCP was turned off on the D-Link.

Do you think if I turned off DHCP, gave myself a static IP, but left the SMC on the WAN side of the D-Link....I could see the SMC and PCs connected to it? Maybe I should just try this;)

Arrrghhhh...kinda frustrating

Unfortunately the Access Point part of Wireless Cable/DSL Router is not implemented in a standard way as far as MAC, and IPs concern, as a result there are problems when trying to use cross brand concoctions.

Disconnect the D-Link from every thing and connect one computer to your D-Link and make the Wireless working without DHCP, assign a Manual IP address to the D-Link, and the wireless card that is in subnet of the SMC (192.168.123.x). Once it is working connect the D-Link regular port to regular port and try again.
