Pretty good deal... even if it is 4 x 1.6GHz for 999. +449 for 4 x 2.0GHz.

also it has PCI-E soince the raid controller are optionally PCI-E

this is just a bare bones system. no OS, no keyboard, no monitor. etc etc

"2 PCI Express slots (x4 with x8 connectors)"

So a gaming graphics card might not fit.

Keep in mind that these dual-core and quad-core Xeons require FB (fully-buffered) DIMMs, which are a new pinout, not backwards-compatible with DDR at all. But it's easy enough to pick it up on FleaBay. I have two dual-core Xeon servers I'm setting up and I just purchased 4Gb (4X 1Gb) of Infineon PC2-4200F Fully Buffered memory for $150. That was the speed I required, and the faster speed would cost more, obviously. The FB DIMMs apparently have increased bandwidth and other benefits (see this briefing).

Also understand that this system comes with no OS, nor does it have any optical drive. This system is barebones in every sense of the word, it doesn't even include a mouse or keyboard. You're basically paying $1000, for 2 low speed quad core CPU's you'll never be able to fully utilize, a motherboard (w/ no 16x PCI-E slot), case, PSU, 1GB RAM, and 2x250GB SATA HD's. For a homeuser this system is pretty worthless.

It looks like XP pro would support 2 processors, no matter how many cores

any thoughts?

How many of your applications will utilize them? ;)

Does anyone know if the CD/DVD drive is EIDE or SATA? $99 for the drive from Dell is ridiculous.

You can actually save a bit more money if you'd rather get hard drives on your own. If you go with a single 80GB one you are at $779. Its $20 extra to go to a single 160GB, and $50 for a single 250GB. The second HDD adds quite a bit, with it basically being an extra $100 (so $99 for a 2nd 80GB, $119 for 160GB, and $149 for 250GB). You can upgrade the CPUs to 1.86GHz for $150.

I wonder how good this would be for the new home server or whatever that Microsoft was touting sometime kinda recently.

i just got this box. got windows xp pro installed on it. even thought the drivers does not support windows xp, i installed the w2k3 drivers on XP and it seems fine. it even shows 8 cpus in the task manager, not a bad deal, i dont need it for graphics, pure computational so this is a pretty good deal. this will probably replace 4-8 old pcs from my computer cluster.

This machine is a beast.

Bought one of these in March with 2 1.6GHz quad cores and 8GB ram. Got it with a single 160GB drive.
Got it for $2501 shipped at the time.

Similar config, with 1.86's and 2 250's is ~2150 sans shipping.

Very nice deal.

And XP on this is a waste. Linux all the way on this thing, it thrashes.

We're using this to process pushbroom sensor data, the sensor can continuously collect several terrabytes a day and requires tons of image processing and rigid body dynamics modelling.

For this price this machine is a very very serious player. And it compiles like a bat out of hell.

Anybody know of a server currently for sell that has a dual CPU motherboard with quad core, but has a physical 16x PCI-e slot? It can run either 8x or 16x, but I need that slot! I would have jumped on this deal if only it had this one slot! This one actually has two 8x physical and only runs at 4x.

Problem is that only server-grade motherboards support dual cpus. I was planning to go this route for audio encoding and CAD work. Always wanted to have 8 cores :). I know you can get server mobos that can support 16x pci-e, but unfortunately not in a configuration that dells sells any in. Anybody know who does build these?

bnolsen,
I purchased one as well. I'm running FC6, 64-bit on it. What distro do you run?
