I run a cheepo 300 watt CompUSA with a 235 watt AT power supply switched seperately for all the fans and stuff. I don't seem to have any power issues and run a ATI 9700pro flawlessly. You might have some difficulties setting up two ATX psu's so that is why I went with the secondary AT solution. Mucho easier! :)

Unless your friend has LOADS of stuff, the Antec solution should be adequete. Maybe flash his BIOS (could be running a buggy early version). Also check if he has faulty ram as that often causes instability.

It would technically work I think, but you'd have to wire up a switch directly to the proper pins on the ATX power connector for him to turn on the second PSU, since it couldn't connect to the motherboard.

However, an Antec 300W PSU should be plenty for even a moderately loaded system, unless it's a very old PSU with very new components. What components does he have, and exactly which model of power supply?
