What other DC programs are able to take advantage of high end P4's and Dual Processor systems by default?

The one's right off the top of my head are:

Distributed Computing - RC5
United Devices

Secondly, out of the programs (and others you post) listed above, support running as a service or as a hidden application during launch?

Distributed Computing RC5 - Does
United Devices - Does Not

I have several machines running the SETI service which is great. However, for the new 3.2's I just received, only one instance is running using 50% of the processing power. (AFAIK you can't install two instances of the SETI service, can you?)

Last, I don't need the 'end user' messing with the settings or seeing an icon in the icon tray they've never seen before. When they do, they say, "I must have a problem with my computer, becuase I have an icon on my desktop that I haven't seen before." Suddenly the name Nick Burns starts to carry a bit of irony.

Summary - what projects are out there that will run on the fastest processors out there and run hidden?

UD doesn't to my knowledge support dual CPU's but I use Firedaemon to run them as a service and just select the hide option on the folders so nobody messes with anything.

If you install set as a service along side seti driver you can select to have multiple instances. If those are hyperthreaded CPU's and are dual you can set it up to run 4 instances for some pretty good output.

I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head at hte moment though.

United Devices multi-processor-capable??? isn't UD the people running "think", the cancer-project, and atleast last time tried "think" a couple of years ago it was impossible to utilize more than one cpu, and AFAIK they've still not upgraded the UD-client since then...

As for multi-cpu & service-install, BOINC have both of these things. Also, CPDN under BOINC is markedly faster on Intel-cpu's than the "classic" version...
When the separate BOINC-gui "soon" is released, can even customize the install-process and deploy service-install to multiple computers simultaneously. More info on install-choises here

BTW, personally was using FireDaemon to run 2 seti-services under "classic" for some years so... ;)

The Ud client automatically updates itself when downloading WU's you can set it and forget. Although nothing yet to support dual platforms ATM.

The UD client can be auto-updated, but AFAIK the last update was... to v3.0, build 2814, released July 2002. It's atleast this version they had last time tried UD. :)

The science-applications like "think" and the different projects being released later have of course been upgraded since then, but this doesn't help as long as the UD-agent haven't changed, since it's this part that controls upload/download & disallows smp-support and win95.

FAD -- I run large quantities of clients "hidden" as a service from a central queue server. In fact, the queue server can run quite hidden as a service as well !!! FaD automatically determines the optimum number of threads to run (usually number of processors but with hyperthreading it is 2 threads per processor) and gives me little or no grief.

So far, none of the users of those clients has even noticed FaD running ... been doing it for at least 6 months ...

Please take note that your P4 3.2 with HT enable is a powerful machine for SETI classic. :)

Perhaps you can refer to my sig of "Join our SETI@home TeAm". SETI Driver will help you to take advantage of your P4 3.2 HT ability to maximize your crunch.

You need to set Maximum Processes to "2" at SETI Driver. So each process will use up 50% of your P4 power and is 100% in total. Happy DCing. :)

p/s: you can place a link to SETI Driver at your Start Menu-Startup and set properties-run-minimized to run as a icon in taskbar.

That's exactly what I'm trying to prevent. The "end user" will see that icon and then start asking questions. That's cool though. I appreciate the information! ;)
