Hello all.

I just got an old computer from my relative and its a Micron millennia pro2 and has dual pentium pro capability. But right now in the machine there is only 1 cpu. i would like to get another cpu to make it dual since a pentium pro 200mhz is like 9 bucks =] .

So i have a few questions about it

1)can i get any pentium pro 200mhz chip thats out there or does stepping or other specs matter?

2)also i took a pic of the dual sockets can anyone tell me what is the other big connector in back of the second socket??

sorry for the bad pic, my freind has my digicam so i had to take it with my webcam =(

The proc dual pics

3) what OS will benefit from the dual cpu? i guess since this machine is old so far would be NT/ linux right? not sure if w2k will run good on the machine =) any thoughts on that?

Thanks
laura

I can help with some of your questions

1.) stepping *shouldn't* matter
2.) don't know, will check around
3.) linux, winNT, win2k, winXP Pro

The extra connector is for a voltage-regulator module (VRM). You would want to get another PPro with the same amount of level-2 cache and it would be nice to get the same exact stepping as well. You'll need an operating system that supports dual processors, such as Linux, WindowsNT, Windows2000 or WindowsXP Professional.

You might want to confirm what stepping of PPro you have currently and figure out where to get a VRM. Also, don't expect a radical boost in system performance by going to dual processors. I'd take a $10 Celeron 366 over dual PPro 200's any day.

you can buy a pair of pp200's with 1mb caches on ebay for like $15.00. It's a good buy if you really intend to use the computer. Nyway, you can install NT4 on there and use it as some kind of windows friendly server or something. I have a similar situation with my proliant 2500. Unfortunatly mine sounds like a vaccum when it's on, so I seldom bother.

You need the VRM. And one that will work in that motherboard. You can't just plug any one you find in.

Well, I found some info for you.

The Micron Millennia pro2 used a Micronics W6LI motherboard. (Look around and find a picture of this board and make sure it's the same one as I saw one report that the Millenia pro2 sometimes used a different board.)

The VRM that is uses is the same as the one used for a Tyan S1662D motherboard. It also is the same VRM used on a number of Compaq systems. The Compaq part number is 225431-001 - it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Look on ebay. That's where I got my dual PPro setup. As far as your stepping, look at the s-code on the bottom of the chip, it's printed on the big black rectangle about 2/3 down, or on the top if you take the heatsink off, oh and the cache size is there too, either 256k, 512, or 1mb, but I think you need a special motherboard to run those, at least that's what I gathered from intel's manuals for the pr440fx. Yea PPro!

Bump for another question.

how do i know which voltage i need on the VRM for the cpu?? or does it do it automatically?

i see on ebay they sell a VRm for my board but it says its programmable for the volts, and i dont want to fry my anything =X

thanks
