Dual power supplies

Has anyone used or tried to use two power supplies?
Like one for the MB and hard drives, and one for optical drives, floppy, fans, lights etc.
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

I use an AT PSU for my Fans and accessories with a self made on/off switch along with my ATX PSU on 1 of my Rigs...works great

You would need a "Y" ps adapter. The coolermaster Stackercase comes w/ one. You can put 2 ps in that case. Basically you plug both power supplys into the adapter then
plug the adapter into your motherboard.

Looking to do something exactly same ... Just posted in one of my old threads ...

..... I have an old dismantled HP pavilion with 160 watt power supply. Do you think it's a good idea to use that as a separate power supply for my fans and drives? (I already have Antec 350 Watt in my system)

Any mounting ideas?

Seems unnecessary.

What seems unnecessary ... adding 160 Watts to the existing 350?

(I have 5 hard drives (2 in raid), ATI AIW, P2.66, n number of usb devices .. DVD, CD, ZIP, floppy drives), 6 fans .. you think the power supply will take it? )

I have an ATI AIW video card which screws up every now or then (words get corrupted).. Then I have to restart (or if I'm lucky, it automatically recovers after the message "VPU recover has reset your graphics accelerator")

Long back when I contacted ATI, they told me that even though you have the recommended power supply, it's good to have more ... since this is something which might be responsible.

I am not sure where to mount it, if I could fit it in the bottom of my case would be best, but I would probobly go external it wouldn't be a big deal to splice longer wires since all that would be needed would be the +5 and +12 molex and berg connectors. the bigger problem, but not insurmountable would be turning it on if a ATX PSU was used. If a AT PSU was used like LED used it wouldn't be a problem at all. I believe I would use a 12 volt relay instead of a switch.
