dual PIII vs 1 athlon for server

I'm trying to put together a counter-strike/file server/web server and was wondering if i should get a dual PIII system or a single Athlon system. I understand what dualies are good for and that they don't "double" the effective clock speed which is why i never considered a dual PIII system before, seeing how fast Athlons are, but I'm not exactly sure how much this server might benefit from a dual PIII system.

I still haven't seen any benchmarks comparing single athlons to dual PIIIs. More specifically, I'm thinking around PIII 800s and maybe Athlon 1.2. Eitherway, let me know what you think. I read a previous thread and it seems a lot of people were pro-dualie but were disregarding the fact that PIIIs are slower than 1ghz+ athlons so that maybe even 2 of them would still be slower than an athlon. Also, will the PIII dual system cost much more than a decent athlon system (if i use a $140ish mobo for the athlon system)? Thanks for any help.

The Dual P3s will give your server a better support base, you can conduct a lot more command with a lot less lost... the Athlon however, is a lot, lot, lot cheaper than the Pentium 3s... sure, granted, they're not as "user-friendly" they're an incredible value compared to P3s... just check out the latest prices here and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about...

Latest CPU prices at Sharky

I'd stick w/ an Athlon server.... it'll be sufficient for your Counter-Strike needs... no need spending money for extra performance that won't really be needed :)

The P3 dual will give you a better performance. But exactly what power you require may change this.

Dual P3's, u might look at the recent Value Socket 370 Dual boards roundup. Looks like IWill's DVD266-R is the champ.

Not to confuse things even worse but you could also go dual Athlon with a mobo like the Tyan Tiger S2460. This is what I'm thinking about doing for my next server upgrade.

what are you gonna run ? I mean regular server, I would use P3 coppermines or copper-t but for cheaper/faster, I would go dual athlon but mobo reliability is unknown... but i just bought 2 new p3 1.26ghz w/512k for regular databasing and xeon w/ 1mb cache for higher end database...

Dual Athlons is the only server solution in my mind. I really want more boards out, but the tyan thunder k7 is great.

Id go single athlon for a file server. U dont need much power there.
