I have been thinking of building a dual pentium 3 system (xeon or non, doesn't matter) for server purposes, secondary gaming machine, etc. I just wanted to know what kind of performance could i expect and what would it compare to? I have noticed that pentium3 cpus are still fairly costly and was just curious.

I had a dual 1.4ghz tualatin system on an Iwill DVD266u-RN up until 1 1/2 years ago. I loved the computational power of the machine as it beat up on the processors available at the time, but its gaming ability was lacking, and single processor machines (especially hyperthreaded ones) soon caught up and surpassed it quite quickly.

For servers, duals are great but i think you would get more performance for around the same price if you went with a dual opteron 140 machine depending on what you do about the memory.

well for my primary gaming i have my system that i have right now. i'm trying to build a cheap server solution for my apartment for internet connection sharing and possibly as a gaming server for games like counter-strike since i'm on a T1 connection.

You would prolly be able to get a dual Socket A system for the same as a Dual P3.

Save even more by getting XP's and enabling MP on them (not done any research on this, try google, this forum, etc.)

You can pick up Some inexpensive duel cpu solutions (like duel 933mhz) The boards and the Cpu's are relatively cheap on ebay and such. A machine like this will handle a simple server for a small network and even effectively run exchange or IIS for you rather smoothly.

Dual CPUs are great when using newer cpus and software that takes advantage of SMP, but unless you're doing this, it might be more practical to buy an inexpensive AMD setup. A 1700+ and a decent mb will only run you a little bit over $100 and will blow a dual P3 away in most applications. This is what I have in my server. It's worlds faster than my mother's dual P3-550.

What's your budget?

I guess I have that fetish too. I still have my Abit BP6 setup w/ two 366 celerons oc'ed at 550. I used to run it as a server but since the upgrade, it's been just sitting in the corner of my room for the past several months.

so no one knows what kind of performance a dual p3 setup would be comparable to?

on that note: my friend may be selling his mobo with dual p3-733 what would be a decent price to offer?

$100? If he balks, tell him how fast an equally priced 1700+ and a cheap mb would be. :)
