Dual P3 1000 SDR or Athlon XP 2000 DDR

Want to find out if a Dual P3 1000 run faster or slower than a Athlon XP 2000+ speed?

Just got a Acorp Dual Socket370 MB. was going to replaced my broken BP6, but found out the Acorp doesn't support celeron smp.
So, thinking about getting 2 P3 1ghz fcpga cpus with 512MB SDR Ram(Max) and build a linux box.

However, the price of P3s are still so high ~110 shipped each. So the total cost would be $220

But with $220, I could get a KT333 MB with a Athlon XP 2000+.

So could somebody please let me know which would be a better investment (faster, staple) if I am planning to run linux.

Athlon XP.

The problem with SMP is that you don't always benefit from having 2 CPUs. Even if both are used, you'll only get a 60% boost or so. Sooo...

1000 x 1.6 = 1600 < Athlon XP 2000+ (1666.66666666666666667mhz)

Maybe if you're supersticious you should stay away from the Athlon tho.

😀

I can shed some light on this, maybe. My previous work system was a dual-P3 733EB running PC133 SDRAM, on an MSI 694D Pro-R motherboard, which is probably a lot like yours. I upgraded to a KT333 board with an AthlonXP 1700+ and PC2100 DDR. It is definitely much more responsive for my usage pattern, which is typical Outlook/Word/Excel/Access stuff on Win2k, with McAfee VirusScan cranked up to maximum aggression. It happens to be faster at multithreaded 3D rendering in Caligari trueSpace 4 too.

The 1700+ happens to have exactly the same MHz as a pair of P3 733's, so hopefully this helps you out with some grounds for a decision.

thanks sickbeast, mechBgon for the opinions.

I think I am convinced that getting a dual P3 1000 will be slower

However, do I have any advantage (e.g. stability..) running the dual P3.

I have been using a dual celeron 533 for the last 2 years with Windows 2000 and experienced very good stability compare to some of my other computers.

Would linux makes any difference (e.g. in running the dual P3 closer to the Athlon xp 2000 speed)

Go with the athlon for the money its way better. Rarely would you use both of the processors efficiently and p3s are still expensive. Not to mention dual p3 boards.

The only advantage I can think of for running the dual P3 setup is that you would almost never have 100% CPU usage in windows. For example, if you were watching a DVD, one of your CPUs would be free for other tasks. It's pretty nice, actually. If you do a ton of multitasking in windows, you might actually like having the SMP setup. It just makes your system run smoother when multitasking. You could always just wait and get one of those new P4s with multithreading though.

Oh, and I still stand by my reccomendation for the Athlon XP rig, by the way.
