Dual OS's question...

I want to have Windows 98 on my computer so I can play my classic games properly. (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood I & II, etc.) Now, I've made a partition in Partition Magic 8.0 of 5 gigs labeled 'G:\'. I put the Windows 98 CD-ROM in after it was partitioned and situated and going through the setup process it said it was a "non-MS-DOS" format and it gave me an option to either reformat my entire hard drive (yea, ok) or exit. I obviously chose the latter which is why I'm asking this question: what do I do? Is 5 gigs enough for Windows 98 and the few games I want to install? How do I format it to MS-DOS? Help is appreciated.

WTF?

There is a forum specifially for Operating Systems.

You would have better luck getting an answer there.

That is what all the emoticons are about.

Yeah but no one ever replies in there. 🙁

Okay, you said your 5GB partition was formatted, correct? Did you use fdisk or what?

It's "made". Not formatted or anything. How do I do that?

Boot into DOS and run c:\fdisk
IIRC, it's been awhile for me 😉 but no one else seems to want to help you out.

I havent played/ heard of any of the games you mentioned, but then I am sure 5 gig is more than enough for them if you do not plan to install other applications (M$ office, etc...)

As far as formatting to MSDOS is concerned, well: MS-DOS uses a FAT16 filesystem (I think) which is pretty outdated. Instead, you might want to format it to FAT32 which is what most Win98 machines have.
As far as "How do I format it" is concerned, I think win98 boot floppy can do it for you.

Insert the floppy, boot from it. Choose the option "Start computer with CD-Rom support". At the command prompt, type
format x: (where x is the name of the drive you want to format)
I think that should work..but its been a while since I installed win99 so I am not too sure. HTH

I have my main hard drive formatted NTFS as well as the 5 gig. Should I convert that 5 gig to FAT32 then run the Windows 98 boot disk or can I do all that in fdisk? I just restarted my computer with the boot disk in then did Shift+F5 to get command prompt but it only allows me A:\. If I try and go to Command Prompt now in Windows XP, C:\fdisk doesn't work. Hmm.

If you already have a bootdisk for win98, use that- it should have fdisk on it. Run it from the floppy, then.
Win98 won't run on NTFS, so yes, use FAT32.

This belongs in Software and more!

You need to format one partition fat32, then copy all the cab files to that partition, then run the installer. Next boot up with the winxp or 2000 disk and install. It will install bootloader for you.

OMG!!! d00ds, you can format the damn partition from within windows.

My Computer/right click on G:/Format...

Your hardDISK now has a number of DRIVES on it. C:, G:... etc. You have to format the G: drive.

Not if it's not recognized by windows, though. Moot, I think this thread's been worked 🙂

I just did that. I'm still getting that same initial error.

You need to format the drive as FAT32, and it needs to be set as primary for 98 to install on it. 98 will not install on a HD that is seen as logical.
