I am in the process of building my next greatest PC workstation and I am considering building a
dual Athlon machine. After checking around, I had the impression that if the application software
used is not optimized for dual CPU, it may not be worthwhile considering that a Athlon MP CPU is
about $50 more costly than a comparable Athlon XP and a dual CPU M/B is about $100 more expensive
than a single CPU M/B. On top of that, the latest dual Athlon M/B, such as the Tyan Tiger MPX only
supports 266FSB and PC2100 DDR memory while the latest single CPU M/B, such as the Iwill XP-333R
supports 333 FSB, PC2700 DDR memory plus built-in IDE RAID controller.
I am not sure how soon will the dual CPU manufacturers be able to release their next M/B with
support for 333 FSB and PC2700 memory. At this moment, I am slightly inclined to stick with
a single CPU system. However, if I should decide for a dual CPU system, according to AMD site
the only dual Athlon M/B AMD recommends include only 3 products: Asus A7M266-D,
MSI K7D Master, and Tyan Tiger MP(X). I would be ineterested to hear if there is any one who
might have experiences with those 3 M/B. Your input is greatly appreciated.
