I need some suggestions from the gurus on how I can setup up one of these systems for my business (my own)...Here is the catch...I want to be able to oc the chips and thus get 2 lower speed 240-242 chips and try to clock them up to the much more expensive opterons now....I see that as a great advantage if it can be done...

Also give me your thoughts on brands of boards, PSU for a dual setup.....

I am likely going to go after a vid card strong in cad with dual monitor support...

2gb of ram

Dual 80-120gb drives in Raid format....

help out a brotha here!!!

buy an enermax psu, their expensive but mine is quiet as a mouse, and solid as a brick, unless i have the case open, the pc in standby (so all other fans are off) and shove my head right under the psu, i can't hear it. Go for 2 244s, a MSI K8T Master2-FAR, some kingston registered ram, some seagate satas for raid'ing with, and get either a QuadroFX 500 or FireGL 9600, but if you need more juice get like a QuadroFX 1100. sounds like a server to me

Duvie, I don't think you can overclock a dual Opteron setup. The motherboards that support dual Opterons don't seem to have any overclocking options. You'd still probably be happy with a couple of 1.8ghz 244's, though.

Depends on the board.

You sgould be able to get at least 9-14Mhz overclock. When you hit 15 or highe that is when SATA and some other PCI items get a little loose.

So get a pair of 242's and set them to 214Mhz and see what happens.

I didn't think Opterons were multiplier locked, meaning you could just up the multipliers to reach the higher speed. The only board that would have overclocking features would be the MSI Dual Processor Board, since it is meant more for the consumer versus a Tyan or something that is meant to be in a server enviornment and will have no overclocking/adjustment options at all.

opterons' multis are locked. i have the MSI board and technically you can overclock. i was never successful even with a modest overclock from 200 to 205 on FSB. i had the iwill dk8x in the past and it was very unstable for me. i think i just got a bad board, but the MSI will hold up for me until dk8n comes out.
