Hello,

I have about $2,000 to upgrade one (or possibly two) computers in my small recording studio. I'm wondering what are the advantages of going Opteron vs X2?

Thanks!

Dual opteron == expensive, but can handle two dualcore CPU's.

X2 or a single dualcore opteron = best price/performance ratio due to lower cost of mobo and memory.

with your budget and task I would go for the last option.

Hey, as far as gaming goes, how do the opteron and X2 compare. Since the opteron's are cheaper, they must have a disadvantage...

Actually, whats the differnce between the two...

erm...u want to play games in ur recording studio? btw use the search button and read some threads about opteron. otherwise u will get boon answers like:
Opterons are made of AMDs finest silicone! and thatswhy they are best. But maybe thats what u like to hear :)
and make sure your mainboard supports Opteron.

Since 7800GTs are $100 cheaper than 6800 Ultras, the Ultras must be better...
More expensive doesn't always means better, it could also be the effect of market pressure...

But how does that affect performance? Esp in gaming? Do the require registered/ECC ram? I dunno...anyone know if there's a good article about this or anything? I did a google, but all the comparisons i found were relating to Xeons and other server stuff...

Dude, way to hijack the thread.

To the OP, I would look at opteron 165 or a X2 3800+ setup. Both are about the same so go for whatever is cheaper. They will serve your interests and budget alot better than dual regular opterons, unless you get the 244's that were selling for $85. Even then, you would have to get a dual 940 board which cost ~$200 on the low end and then pair that up with pricey registered ram.
