Dual Opteron and Heatsink

Hello,

I have built a dual Opteron 244 system with the Tyan K8S Pro mobo. This was the first computer I have built, and unfortunately I bought a case (which said it could take extended ATX) which fits the mobo but does not allow me to put the drive cages in once the mobo is installed. Here's my question, in order for me to fit the motherboard in the case (this was before I realized the drive cages were not going to fit), I had to take off the heatsink I had just put on (it is the stock AMD one) and turn it around because the locking mechanism was getting in the way. In the instructions it says that I'm supposed to replace the thermal compound if I remove the heatsink. I didn't because I figured I haven't used the CPUs yet and the compound has not melted yet. Am i correct in this? Should I go buy some new compound? What does AMD recommend without me voiding the warranty?

I did turn on the machine and watched the temps of both CPUs. The CPU I tinkered with was a couple degrees hotter than the second CPU, but it idled at no more than 37 C, while the second CPU idled at 32-34 C.

Thoughts? Thanks for any help!

You should be fine. Especially since it hasn't "melted" yet,.

Personally i would buy some AS5 as it is much better quality than stock.

I dont want to answer the warranty question. The most ill say is use another HSF if you want to use seperate Thermalpaste ifyou want to... those are not going to kil you processor. OCing on the other hand is a different story.

Ok, cool. I'm going to watch the CPU temps for a little while under high load and make sure they don't go up too high. If I see the one I reoriented the heatsink with gets much hotter than the other CPU I'll definitely pick up some thermal paste.

Thanks for your help,
