Dual monitors using a laptop

Here at work, I have an LCD display that I plug into the VGA-out port of my laptop. I run dual screen as a result, but I'm having the following problem:

When I take my laptop home at night, I clearly don't take the monitor with me. I use the laptop from my home in the evening. When I come back to work in the morning, Windows XP has "forgotten" that the second monitor should be used as a secondary display device.

Is there a way to prevent this? Or is there a simple way to toggle on the use of the second display instead of having to go into the display properties page every time?

I thought that all computers did this. even desktops. When you disconnect a monitor you have to tell windows that you want it to be a secondary monitor again when you reconnect it.
