Dual Monitors (DVI) on a Single DVI Video Card

Hi Folks,

Silly question.

So a number of video card offerings these days appear to have 1 DVI port, and HDMI port and several Displayports.

In the case of myself I have 2 Monitors, 1 DVI/VGA only connectivity, the other DVI / VGA / HDMI connectivity.

How does one connect the two monitors to a video card in this case (ex. card Gigabyte 7970 single DVI card) ??

Not a silly question at all. I was really frustrated when I tried to use dual monitors, each with dvi/vga inputs, with my HD7770. I could not find any way to do it. I finally had to buy a HDMI cable and use the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the graphics card.

That is, I plugged the HDMI cable directly into the HDMI output from the graphics card and used the adapter to plug into the monitor.

At a time when more and more users are running multiple displays, the latest generation (7900 series) cheaping out on the outputs is rather disappointing. Two Dual-DVI outputs (in addition to HDMI and sometimes displayport) was standard on mid to high end cards from most manufacturers and partners on previous generations.

Some places, like Fry's electronics and probably monoprice.com, will sell a cable adapter that has a built-in adapter. That way, it's just one cord to go from, say HDMI to DVI, and you don't have to also use a separate adapter.
