dual monitor ?

this may sound like a dumb question ....but
what is the dual monitor thing i keep hearing about
i assume it means 2 monitors but why would you want two monitors ?

I keep Winamp/Trillian/Can watch movies and or tv on my secondary monitor all while I surf the net or whatever else on my main monitor.

I can't do without dual monitors now

I extend my desktop in XP and use the 2nd monitor to watch TV and have an IM open and use the primary LCD for work apps

i'm watching tv on one monitor and browsing AT forums with the other. it operates like a huge screen but you can do two separate things in each of them, meaning you can scroll over to switch between screens

In most cases, your desktop extends across both screens. You just move your mouse to the edge of one screen and it apepars on the other. It sounds a little silly, but it's really, really worth it. People who use Photoshop and other graphics design stuff swear by it, and it's also handy for programs that you want constantly running, but aren't actively looking at (email client/im/winamp programs.); of course, it's also useful for "real" work--you can pull up information on the web or some reference software on one screen, and write a paper/document in Word on the other, or you can read an article on one screen and take notes on the other. (oh, and welcome to the forums )

does your current card have both DVI and VGA out puts? If so it will work, you don't need two video cards if the one has two outputs.

If you get dual monitors, be sure to get "UltraMon" a great little utlilty for this setup. What is even cooler, is running dual monitor/dual computer, talk about multitasking!

I having been messing with VMR 9 and spanning games and videos, so fun to watch a video on one large screen.

In addition to all the other comments, you can use both screens for one application if you want. For example, if you have a large Excel worksheet, you could stretch it across both monitors, thereby allowing you so see more of it at one time.

Get a video card with dual DVI (do a search in the "video" form section for a full listing). Once you have gone dual, you will never go mono again.

I have 3 15" Dell 1504FP TFTs, and having a multi monitor setup is just too damn good, I would never ever sacrifice the functionality for a single larger monitor for example.

I even take the 3 monitors to LANs and get stunned gazes. That probably is a bit gratituous but it's always nice to not have to mess up my display settings.

and someone mentioned UltraMon, oh hell yes, get this program if you have multiple monitors and Windows. It just makes things so, so, so much better.

Definitely look into a copy of UltraMon. It adds some nice features for multiple-monitor setups that I have found to be worth every penny for the app.

I run dual 1801fp's at home, but here at school I had to downsize to a single LCD, and my dorm room TV connected via S-video.

Loosing my dual monitor set up was the worst part of going to college. lol.

Yep, I experimented with thsi at work a few weeks ago and a few nights later I ordered a second monitor for my home machine.... it really makes working on alot of things easy.

Game on one monitor and have teamspeak/IM/browse web on the other with no problems on most games. Some dont like you not having the mouse constantly on the game but thats pretty rare.

Final Fantasy XI is an example of a game like that. The mouse doesnt lock to the 'gaming monitor' and clicking on the other monitor = instant kick. Ive encountered very few of these though.

What I particularly use dual monitors for is Word/Excel on my primary and IE on the secondary. Quite a lot of useful information is on the internet and is relevant to my work so it reduces window swapping.

Dual works great if you use any type of office based "productivity" apps. Avoids switching to windows that are hidden from view.
