Dual monitor setup - can't set correct resolution

Hey all, question for ya.

Sometimes my wife likes to watch me play video games, at least ones with stories. I set up our hdtv as a second monitor in Clone mode. She'll sit on the couch and read, and pop her head up when a cutscene comes around. I play on a 19" LCD on a DVI cable, the TV is a 42" DLP (720p) on a DVI to VGA converter. I also play racing and soccer games with a wireless controller on the DLP.

In XP I could set the resolution at my LCD's native 12x10, and the DLP would basically scroll up and down. Doesn't matter much that the whole screen isn't showing when I'm playing on the LCD and she's just watching.

In Vista x64 however, when I set it to dual monitors in the nV control panel, the max resolution is 12x7. This is obviously perfect for the DLP, but on the LCD either everything's stretched out (scaling) or majorly letterboxed (no scaling).

Is this a problem with the Vista/Vista x64 nVidia drivers, or is this something specific to the way Vista/Vista x64 "reads" the cables? Would getting a DVI to HDMI cable for the DLP solve this? Can it be solved at all, since displaying a resolution like that would just seem stupid to most people, and maybe they removed the capability?

Thanks in advance,

It's a known issue and there are currently no solution other than maybe 3rd party software. Not sure whether it's the OS or the drivers, though.

Ugh. Thanks.

FYI: 3rd party software...I tried using UltraMon and it crashed every time I tried to configure the second monitor. Anything else out there?
