dual monitor issue: signal keeps getting switched

Here at work, I have 2 monitors: one wide-screen (HP w2207h), and one 'standard' (Samsung SyncMaster 204B). The HP is set as primary...but every time I log out and walk away for more than a couple minutes, the settings are switched when I get back: the main desktop is on the Samsung, and both screens are running at the wrong resolution. The situation is easy enough to fix; it's just annoying because it happens *constantly*.

The machine is running XP Pro (32-bit), and uses an ATI Radeon X1300 video card. The card has 2 DVI ports, and I've tried both monitors on both ports, to no avail. Regardless of the arrangement, the signal still gets switched. Updating the drivers hasn't helped, and none of the settings in either Windows itself or Catalyst Control Center seem to have any affect, either - so I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

I get just the opposite - the 'flip' happens once I lock the system and let it sit; re-booting usually *fixes* the problem. Came in this morning and it had happened over the weekend at some point, in fact.

Are you using one video card or two? If two, make sure both your motherboard and Windows have the same monitor designated as primary. I had something similar happen to me so I went into my Motherboards BIOS and made sure my PCIe video card was the primary display (the other video card was the onboard video). Once I did that the problem went away.
