Can you run dual monitors as extended desktop with a VGA splitter? The computer is a Dell with onboard video.
 
Obviously a VGA splitter provides just a 2nd copy of the same signal. To get an actual 2nd display surface, you're going to need a 2nd graphics device in the machine.

Some onboard video units, namely those from SiS and Intel, can have a 2nd head added through a special expansion card. You might want to check what Dell offers for your machine.
